playing asf, wmv error -4x0x80040218

working with windows home server (installed as a service) with hauppage pvr 250 and the latest placeshifter and client version 6.2

tried them both but it's impossible to play back asf or wmv files on other pc's.
playing asf, wmv error -4x0x80040218
Both asf and wmv play back perfect on the pc's themselfs. no problems on the server and on the client pc's.

I have 1050 musicvideo's with +- 250 wmv's, so no i will not decode them to another format, i'm loosing to much quality.

So please can someone give me a solution...everything works except this..and yes i have the wright codecs installed on server and clients.

I've read that someone uses a custom stv with another mediaplayer..but how do i do that??

I encounter the same problem using the client on my notebook system. I am using the 6.3.8 beta. I do not know if it worked with the released version or not. I have also encountered an issue that music does not play on the MVP with the beta. A friend of mine says it works fine with the released version.

I just tried using the placeshifter on the client and it works fine. You may need to use the PS as a workaround.

Some formats can't be streamed via the server & have to be played directly by the client PC -- try using UNC paths for the import paths so the client can access the files itself.

thanks Andy, i even tried that, didn't worked. Is it me alone or is everybody having the same problem when streaming wmv or asf from a whs to a client..whs is windows 2003 software, and all my other clients are windows xp pro's.
Is it due to wmv format is properietairy from microsoft so no one else can see or use the code?
There must be a solution to this..some streamers can stream it other don't..my old dlink does not stream it and the new dlink is recoding wmv to stream it.
Who else have this problem?

Here is a reply I just got from support concerning this issue in the beta I using:
OK, I remembered what this one was. There's a limitation where WMV, ASF andWMA files can't be streamed from a SageTV server to a SageTV Client. Theclient has to have the same drive mappings as the server; and then they canbe played back (it'll treat them as a local file). (interestingly theplaceshifter doesn't have that limitation because it doesn't use DirectShowfor playback)

thanks, i have downloaded the latest version 6.3 of placeshifter and yes it plays wmv and asf...great relief for me. Btw now it's getting a really good produkt:-)
Now the hard part is starting..getting xlm tv listings in ST for belgium. I still find it strange that there is no simpeler solution to get those listings for everybody...sage tv is mainly about watching and recording television. And even in version 6.3 it's quiet hard for a noob like me.

When you switched to UNC paths as I suggested above, did you do anything to make sure the existing imports used the new UNC import path? If not, then the existing files were still seen at the old path. See this FAQ: Can the actual Video Recording Directory location be moved or renamed?

Essentially, move the file from its current location so that SageTV will see that it isn't there, so it can import the file from its new path. (Just rename some dirs instead of actually moving files.)
