Ready boost 4 XP

I haven't used Vista (nor I want 2) but the Ready boost they have for vista can now be used for XP. I don't know if that will help for my sage client computer or the Sage server computer. Does anyone have some insite? I wonder if this will work to startup faster. I might give it a try when I have a chance but it may be a week or so.

That doesn't make your system start faster. With ram, when you turn off your system, there goes whatever's in memory.

I think (could be wrong), that ready boost just starts your computer faster because of the system prefetch (instead of getting the files off the harddrive during startup).

After using ReadyBoost on 2 different Vista machines, I think its pure advertising BS, IMO. But it sure does increase the sales of memory keys!

Anybody remember those programs promising to double the ram? This one seems to succeed, finally.

PCSTATS tested and reviewed ReadyBoost for Vista a while ago. Although this is a new feature for XP, I think the results are probably relevant. Here's a link to the review page:

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.c...id=2160&page=1

Here's a pretty good summation from their conclusions:

"For memory configurations 1GB or higher, ReadyBoost does not improve system performance, at least not enough for you to notice it.

So there you have it. ReadyBoost can slightly improve performance for users with minimal amounts of system RAM, particularly when it comes to application and boot time.

If you've got an older system and find Microsoft Windows Vista a bit slow, ReadyBoost can act as a band aid solution... but I think in the long term you would be much better served by upgrading to at least 1GB of system RAM.

On the other end of the spectrum, if you have a fairly current computer system, ReadyBoost seems to have little to no effect at the moment. "

So, it seems it's an interesting idea. But I doubt it will provide any significant benefits.

Steve

32bit XP/Vista is 2GB application / 2GB kernel. Meaning the app can not use more than 2GB. The /3gb boot.ini switch should give 3GB to the app, but this takes away from the kernel.

Move to 64bit OS to use more memory. Alas Sage ain't at 64bit yet.

Good points MrD. However, raising the amount of RAM available to the OS (even 32bit Vista) to >2GB will allow for less swapping and more ram available for apps (e.g. games), irrespective of any ini tweaks. Which, given the amount of RAM available is ~3.2GB, wasn't worth the tuning IMO .. though I could be wrong thinking on the matter

Yep same here ... no noticeable help for any of my Vista boxes (6 of them). The RAM upgrades do help though

I'm not even sure that the OS can handle more memory effectively. There is unclear information about it on the internet, and it goes against what I learned about VM systems in school.
