Help with batch converting digital camera videos

I have a number of AVI videos taken with my (Canon) digital camera. These apparently are MJPEG files that really put a heavy load on my PC to play (much worse than HDTV video). Since the HD extenders can't handle these natively my server has to transcode them so the CPU on my server is pegged at 100% while I am watching them from the extender. Can anyone recommend a good (preferably free) program to batch convert all my videos to something that the extender can play natively? Thanks.

Thanks. I'll probably give that a try although the somewhat strange number of steps to download the software and all the warinings about spyware, etc. make me a little nervous. Have you used this before?

Craig,
If you have any experience with virtualdub, you can do it with that program. It isn't the most intuitive program in the world, but it should work.
You would need the MJPEG codec from here first though.

Another possibility is the MP4Cam2AVI Easy Converter. It's open source and says it can do the conversion although I've never tried it before.

cncb ,

Can't you just convert them to DVD quality from within Sage when you are not using the extender? Maybe right before you go to bed setup the conversion in sage?

SageTV Has built in Compression if your files are imported to SAGE you can easily Convert them. If they are imported videos you can just select them then a menu will come up to Convert them. There you can choose several Compression formats.
