Should I use SageTV with a server?

I currently run SageTV on one PC. And I do not have the server running in the background. But I am wondering if I should? What benefit would it provide? Would I get any speed benefits in the UI, etc.?

You're asking about running sage as a service, is that right? (That's a whole different thing from enabling the SageTV server, which has to do with serving SageTVClient, Placeshifter, and Extender clients.)

If you're talking about whether or not to run Server on a separate machine from the Client... I dunno. Kinda depends.

Off the top of my head the PROs and CONs to separating the client from the server:

PROs:
* Client not responsible for server work, vice versa
* Client errors or crashes don't hang the server up (i.e. ruin recording of shows)
* Can separate a potentially noisy/hot server from the viewing area and put a quieter/cheaper client in the viewing area.

CONs:
* Two points of failure for watching shows. If either goes down, you're without TV. If they're both on the same box, you only have one set of hardware that can fail and ruin watching TV.
* Maintenance time and cost of two systems


I've been running both on the same box for a while now and it's not so bad. The noise is getting old, but once I get my HD Extender, the current Client/Server machine becomes dedicated server and gets put in another room.

I think it's a good idea. The service can automatically restart if it crashes and more importantly it separates the UI process from the recording engine, etc. So ,if the UI locks up or if you have any problems in the UI, you can restart it without affecting any active recordings. To me this is huge.

Agreed. No reason not to run it in Service Mode, in my opinion. Service mode also allows it to start without a user having to log in.

well I'm sold I will give it a try... funny thing I came home and my system was locked. No picture to the Plasma... frustrating. I rebooted and I am back in business. Maybe running in service mode will help? considering that it most likely was the UI that crashed.

I checked an no SpongeBob or Blues Clues recorded so I got frustrated... then I realized they changed Noggin from NOGN to NOGGIN so no episodes where found... detail details.
