BUG? Problem with mp3 Tags - SageTV 6.3

Hi All,
I'm a noob to SageTV so excuse me if this has been answered before (although I have looked. I have downloaded and installed the trial of SageTV6.3 and have been playing with it for a few hours. Generally things look OK, although I have a problem involving mp3 files in the media library. All my mp3s are tagged using qTag which cleverly uses ID3v1 tags where possible, and switches to using v2 tags if the content is too big to fit in v1. So far, I've had nothing but joy with my tags, they work flawlessly on my cheapo mp3 player and in Windows Media Player.... but not in SageTV.

It appears that Sage is only reading the v2 Tags, anything tagged using v1 is not recognised and just shows as "unknown" in the library. I did read a thread where someone had the converse problem (only reading v1) but nothing about only reading v2. Is this a known issue or by design?

Help much appreciated,
Doug

Is this a bug?

Yep, that seems to be the case for me. My Meizu (although I haven't checked for new firmware upgrades) only supports V1 tags and in sage they aren't recognized. 5600+ songs all listed as unknown and about 300 songs that are listed perfectly (they haven't been converted as of yet).

Do the files also have v2 tags, even if empty or sparsely used?

If v2 tags are present, then v1 tags are ignored because they are so limited regarding what they can contain.

In my case, no. Only v1 tags. (I just checked to be certain)

What kind of file is it? The last time I tried using just v1 tags in an mp3 file, it worked. I suggest contacting tech support & find a sample file to send, since they may ask for one. Maybe there is something nonstandard about the tags.

I know all of my V1 tags were converted with iTunes. I don't have them here at work to verify if they have multiple tags or not.

Can't really be non-standard tags since PC software programs I've used (like WinAmp, WMP) can read the tags properly, various tagging programs, portable players, etc. etc.
I've entered a support ticket on this. I'll let everyone know what the answer is once they reply.

Update to this...

I sent an mp3 to tech support for their evaluation. It seems that Sage can read SOME of the tags, just not all of them.

It correctly reads these ones:
Name
Year
Size (not sure if that's a tag or just reading the file size)
Length
Sampling Frequency (44.1khz)

What it's missing is:
Artist
Album
Genre
BitRate
Track Number (I think)

Hopefully I'll hear back soon.

-Andy.

I wonder if this might be related to the problem I send to SageTV support

I select album (in a folder) and say play now. Then I go to Now playing
playlist. The playlist contains one album. The right pane shows me the songs
together with their track numbers 1, 2, 3, 4,... When I select View album
details, the screen which comes up shows me all songs with track number 0.

Good news!
I got an e-mail back telling me that they'll fix the IDv1 tag issue in the next update.

That's great news! I was really worried I was going to have to have two sets of MP3 files (those that can play on my MP3 player and those that work with Sage).

Edit: No big deal if you only havea few hundred but last check I was at 45GB worth of music

v1 & v2 tags can co-exist in the same file though. use something like ID3-TagIT to create v2 tags from your v1 tags
