Couple of quick hits:

Firewire connection can be legally 5C encrypted for everything but the local channels. It still works for channel changing though. I dont know that this applies to any SAT boxes.

The Broadcast Flag is just that, a flag. It is not encryption or DRM. Its not going to degrade the output on component video (thats ICT). What the plan was, was to force all PC tuner makers to honor the flag. Meaning if its turned on, their device isn't supposed to record. This, so far, hasn't been implemented. Congress struck it down.

Does anyone know if this is a real concern or if anyone is doing that now ?

This is where the R5000 has an advantage, if in fact this is the case. If they only "downgrade" the analog hole for HDDVD/BluRay content, then it's not a concern for those of us who would like to capture HD TV content.

What do you guys think ?
There have been threads on satguys about this very thing happening

What happening? AFAIK, neither Cable nor Sat have any sort of Image Constraint Token.

This is correct. The programmers can flag the don't copy bit that is used in the 5C process though, and the carriers could interpret that to downrez on analog out, but I very much doubt the cable guys would do that, as they have a TON of people hooked up via component. Remember the first HD boxes they shipped out there had no DVI or HDMI ports on them.

Satellite doesn't even support firewire, it doesn't support external recorders at all.

Can someone post a link to that satguys thread? I looked at the site and my eyes started to cross. That is one of the worst website designs I've seen in a long time.

just because it's a "bunch of FUD" doesn't mean it wouldn't happen.

Cable companies here in Canada not only rent boxes but they sell them. I have a 6 year old HD TV that has no DVI or HDMI inputs. How can they disable the component outputs which would essentially make my TV useless - upgrading the box wouldn't even help me as my TV can't handle it and I doubt that I am the only one.

The cable box which I have purchased, a SA3250HD, has a DVI output but Rogers Cable does not support this output and recommends that you use component. That would be a big change if they disabled component!

You are difinitely not the only one. I use dishnetworks and my main display is a Pioneer Pro 710-HD. The only High Def inputs are analog (component and VGA).

Nice TV mine is still going strong after 8 years and 3 moves. Back port is RGB not VGA though

I thought RGB = VGA. Anyhow, That is how the client was connected for several years (until last month when the HD extender replaced the client ).

When some people say RGB they mean component as the plugs are Red, Green and Blue. Is this why you mean bcjenkins or do you mean the VGA type of plug that is on most computer monitors?

I read that too, but it worked for the last 4 years with sage and for 5 or so years with Theatertek. Just had to feed it the correct timings (thanks to a utility called powerstrip and the expertise of Karnis at AVS forums).

Now we've taken this thread way off topic... I really like the TV. As you know it has a great picture. I just hope dish does not casterate the component outputs of its vip-211 recievers. Analog is the only way to get video to the TV.

Here's a copy of an e-mail I received today that might be helpful to other forum viewers:

From: sales@hauppauge.com

Thanks for the interest in the HD PVR. And the kind wishes for 2008.

We are planning to build our first units about mid February. The thing
holding us back right now is the plastic case. Otherwise, the unit seems to
be in pretty good shape.

We'll post a note on our website when we are ready to start taking orders.
Most likely this will be around Feb.1

Wow! That is much sooner than I expected. If they actually hit that date, I'll be VERY excited!
