SageTV on CentOS without an encoder card?

Hey guys,

I've got a CentOS box I'm setting up to be a media server among a couple of other minor things. What I want is a way to have my collection of DivX files playable on two TVs at either end of the house. SageTV & 2x Media Extenders seem like the way to go, but can I get SageTV to compile and run without a hauppage card in the system? I've no need to do any encoding given that all happens on my Mac before I put the divx files on the server.

Also, is it event possible to manually add files to the Sage library? Or does everything have to be somehow imported via the video card?

Thanks and happy new year!

Glenn

What do you mean by compile? I performed a test install of unlicensed Sage on a CentOS with no tv tuner without any issues and it runs, but I have problem with getting the extender/placeshifter connecting to it. I always end up with NullPointerException in my log (as documented is separate thread).

What kind of errors are you getting?

SageTV will install on your CentOS system without any hauppauge tuners installed, the only thing that won't work is the television features.

Normally you would use the 'Refresh media files' option in the Video section configuration to import your media. You might prefer to just use the 'Browse for Media' option, which you can use to navigate your directory tree to play media files. You might also want to check out the IMDB plugin and SageMC for a more polished video library.

I think you need to add a tuner, like the dummy tuner, otherwise you'll be prompted every time you fire it up to add a tuner. Also, when you say Media Extender, do you mean MVP or the new HD100? If MVP, divx will have to be transcoded on the fly by your server.

I think this changed recently. I just did a fresh tunerless install of 6.3.5 the other day, and it doesn't prompt to add a tuner. If I go into the video sources screen, it just says there are not capture devices available. Everything else works fine.

Thanks all, very helpful. About the above though, I only just realised there are two models. Doesn't the older cheaper one support DivX natively, it's listed in the formats:

Not natively. It requires transcoding from the server.
