Videos Won't Play w/ VMR9 Vista
I just did a clean install of Vista on a new machine with a 2600XT (7.7 CAT). I'm using PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra as my decoder. No matter what I do, videos will only play when the Video Rendering is set to "Default". If I set it to VMR9, no videos will play and a playback exception error comes up. Setting it to Overlay also allows the videos to play. Is the computer using Overlay when the video renderer is set to Default in Vista?

Hi,
I am able to use VMR9 with Vista and the nvidia purevideo decoder. I wonder if your issue may be related to the PDVD decoder. I have read some things on AVS about PDVD not working with VMR9. I have not researched it in detail as I do not use that particular decoder, but you may want to check it out yourself. Why not try the trial version of the purevideo decoder and see if that will work for you? HTH Jesse

Vista support is still dicey as you've found out, esp with nvidia hardware. Can you run xp on this machine? EVR is not supported by sage which is how most folks on vista get around...
thx mike

I have the same problem. I had to change the Catalyst deinterlacing setting from "vector adaptive" to automatic to get it to work.
BUT, the video quality sucks! With all decoders. Very soft picture. I'm not happy about this. Will probably start my own thread about the quality... |

I was having the same problem today . I put up a post called Sudden video playback issues.....
kay figured out what it was. I didnt want to restore so went to the directory where my Codec pack was installed and reset the setting (which i never mess with anyway) to the default. I then went back to SageTv and loaded a video in windowed mode, up popped a menu asking to use FFD show and I chose Not to use it and low and behold the video played with my Nvidia PureVideo decoder perfectly. So Somehow it got changed to use ffd show i guess and was not working properly. But now all is well! Im using K-lite codec pack with default settings to play all my divx and xvid, avi n stuff |

VMR 9 in Vista is fine in my system (8600GT, 163.75 drivers, AC3Filter, and NV or Cyberlink decoders). After a Sage install (service not running yet) I open Direct Show Filter Manager and set the merits of the NV or CL video decoder to 0x8000 +, and lower (or unregister) Sage's decoder. Re-boot, run Sage, and set the renderer to VMR and the codec choice to default. Play a video in windowed mode and you should see the NV tray icon.
