LAN speeds

Does adding a 10/100 mb device slow down the other devices on a gigabit LAN ? I remember reading an article about wireless LAN's which said if an 802.11b device was mixed with an 802.11g wireless access point the whole system slows down to 802.11b speeds. Is the same true with wired LAN's ?

The concern is will the HD Extender slow the gigabit LAN it is plugged in to ?

No; I'm not 100% sure why, but I think it's because wired networks are typically switched, whereas wireless networks are more like hubs.

Not a network guy...

yep, that's basically it. Wireless devices have to contend for the same "space" (actually its more like the clock cycle for the radio) wired devices don't have the same worry.

I just read something about that about 3 weeks or so ago. It depends on all the devices. If the slow devices use somekind of handshaking, the 1Gb devices can slow do a bunch. Some drivers can be told to ignore this, and there won't be a slowdown. I think it all depends on the devices.

I've never had problems with my HDHomeRun and my network, but I'll try and test some things over the holidays.

Wired connections to a switch shouldn't have a layer 2 problem with performance. Each device has a layer 2 connection to it's port on the switch. Now, some cheap GE switches might run out of buffers if you really hammer them. Also, while the port might be capable of running at full GE speed the layer 3/4 connection will "window" to the supported speed between the endpoints. There's all kinds of issues with sawtoothed windowing also that results in less than expected performance.
