Moving SageTV to a new system

I am soon looking to move my SageTV Media server install to new hardware and I have a few questions that are going to come up.

I have looked at some of the FAQs on backing up stuff but either I was drunk when I read it or I am missing something.

When I get ready to decommission the existing install, do I simply make sure that the old and new installs are of the same version and that all I should have to do is copy the whole SageTV folder from the old system to the new system and overwrite the directory on the new system?

Thanks in advance!

Jason.

I wouldn't copy the whole SageTV install directory from the old system to the new system -- after installing & configuring SageTV on the new system, you'll need to copy wiz.bin to keep your old viewing history, Favorites, etc., but you don't want to copy the properties file from the old system. You can selectively copy some other files such as any channel logos.

You also need to make sure that the recording directories do not logically "move". What I mean is that if your recordings were on \\server1\recordings and c:\recordings, those same references must still be present or all of your recording information will be lost.

If they do move you can always change the paths/drive letters via the administration tools/Computer Management tool in the CP. I recently had to do this as windows decided to remap the D drive to E, and the E drive to D during a reinstall.

Thanks Opus4! I figured there was some kind of danger in moving the whole shot.

Fortunately, I was prepared for this as similar things happen with MCE. I have the recordings going to a physically different drive that will not be reformatted. And I will be sure to make sure Windows sees it as the D: or go into the Logical Disk Manager and change it myself.

Thanks all for the quick help!!!

The recordings might not be recognized in their new locations at first, but the info itself won't be lost. The FAQ about this has a note about repairing mismatched media filenames before doing any move (near the top of the post) and the last Q&A tells how to recover if the recordings are still seen as if they are in a location that no longer exists.
