issues with Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1600 1178, hdtv tuner just stops working....

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16815116007

I bought this to replace a analog ati-550 tuner card, to use with SageTV (been using since version 2.0!!) and as you can see from the number of posts on my profile i have NEVER had any real issues, and SAGETV has worked beyond flawless. superb product!!

but, i am now having genuine issues.

the basic summary is this:

most of the time, i cannot get the tuner to detect atsc signals when setting up a video source. i get to the point where its done, and i choose to scan for channels and it takes 15 minutes to tell me it does not find them. Now for the fun part.... magicly... sometimes it picks the stations up just fine. then it will work for days.. then just stop again... randomly... and no pleading, swearing, kicking reinstalling (even 1 OS reinstall from scratch) blood sweat or tears resolves it. it just stops... then works.

troubleshooting I have done:

1) used the same antenna that my astc enabled tv uses to pick up all the local stations just fine.

2) placed the same antenna used by the tv in the same location that the tv had it in to make sure it was not a positional or interference issue.

3) a full os reinstall, various hardware uninstall and reinstalls

4) swapped pci slots

5) disabled everything i could think of and reinstalled with minimal drivers

6) cried some more, then kicked it... twice.

7) got the signal monitor tool from haupauge, and the signal seemed great, (green at 3/4 of the bar)

8) loaded the crapy winttv app.

now.... on the wintv app. ready ?

it works... it locks onto the signal.. and tv plays just fine in HD.... load sage.. .no go.

so here i am... am i crazy ? is there a issue with the way the tuner is being accessed in sage? is there a trick or option that i am missing ? i have tried a bunch of stuff but all i can come up with is sage is somehow having a issue with interfacing with the tuner..

ideas ??

greatly appreciated, a huge sagetv fan.

bump ??!!??

no-one has any ideas ???

a new symptom to note

during sages failed attempts to tune channels i see the hauppauge signal monitor cycle between :

qam 64
qam 256
and 8hv***

it does this on the order of a few cycles per channel.... then it fails after 70 channels

if i use wintv to scan for channels it does not do this at all it sticks to 8-vsb....

so i think i am right in that sage is not working with the driver correctly...

You might want to work directly with SageTV Support on this.

If you can tune the available channels in WinTV, but get no joy with either:
1) a fresh 'hand-entered' REMAP (no scan); or
2) using CHANNEL SCAN
in the SageTV source setup, then there's a driver layer issue.

The more people who contact SageTV Support with all their HVR1600/1800 issues, the quicker they may come up with a solution that resolves those issues.

Sometimes the forum can give you installation tips, suggestions or even known gotcha's to avoid. It looks like you've done all the suggested options. The 1600/1800 looks like a problem child that needs some intervention with SageTV Support. Especially if it works with the 'crappy WinTV app'.
