Upside down hard drive?

I bought a Rosewill USB/eSATA enclosure to hold a 1 TB drive for making backups, and I really like it. It has a 80mm fan in it with its own power switch, and various cables that came with it. In a nice sturdy aluminum case.

However, when I installed the sata II drive into it, basically it would be upside down if you want the fan to be on the top side. Otherwise it wouldnt do a thing if you turned it over and set it on the fan.

And it didnt come with any *legs* to stand it on its side. Seems kind of wierd to me. So I am wondering if you can run a hard drive in an upside down fashion. Seems like that might be a bad idea...And maybe I just have to find a way to secure it on its side otherwise. Besides that factor, I really like this case. I have bought several other kinds before and this is the best one.

I imagine it must be OK to run the drives, or why else would they have designed it that way??

If you look at the picture you can see the only way to put it in there is upside down.... hmmmmm

Hard Drives can generally be mounted on any of 6 sides and within ±5° of level. Heat dissipation is the primary concern. The same goes for drives in enclosures. I have a few dozen differing models that are anodized aluminum with internal fans that only circulate the air within the enclosure. They're fine (and quiet).

I really like drive enclosures but putting them on their side without an inverted 'T' base makes me nervous. I had to make a house call to a friend whose backup stopped working. When I went to 'find' it, they had stuck the external drive enclosure on their PC case, where it fell over onto the floor and they eventually kicked it out of the way behind the power strip. "Oh, that's what that was!" [sigh]

I have two old HP kayak cases at work which have the HDs mounted vertically on their sides in the front of the case. Airflow in the case is so bad, that was probably the only way the HP engineers could get the HDs to work without bursting into flames. Now that I said they work fine, I had better make some backups since they will probably go bad soon

Im just going to make a *base* to hold it vertically. Then I dont have to worry about it tipping over. Since its going to hold some video content and backups for 3 other pc's.

Just seemed kind of wierd that they didnt include a base to hold it up. Otherwise a nice enclosure.
