6.3.1 - DVD's all return CSS error

I just upgraded my client to 6.3.1 (Default STV), tried to play a physical DVD, and kept getting the "Macrovision CSS" error.

I use latest version of nVidia's PureVideo decoder and I know everything was working before the upgrade. I figured some of my settings might be getting ignored initially so I went through and manually reset all of my A/V settings to use PureVideo again, restarted Sage and my computer a bunch of times, but nothing seemed to help.

Is anyone else seeing this and/or knows how to fix it before I submit a bug report?

Are you using the SageTV Decoders? If so then that's your problem, they don't support CSS DVD playback.

How is the output going to the TV? Are you using a connection type that limits the resolution you can use for DVD playback?

Now that's strange. I just finished playing a few DVDs, and I didn't have any problem whatsoever. If it makes any difference, I am using the nvidia decoder, output to regular pc monitor.

Since its just my client i'll try doing a full uninstall/reinstall of Sage to see if that fixes this issue.

It looks like in 6.3 that SageTV uses the Sage decoders when the decoder setting is set to default.

Previously it used to obey the decoder merits, but doesn't seem to do that now. I needed to specify the Nvidia decoders in the Video/Audio and DVD setup rather than selecting default like previous versions.

This is despite the Nvidia decoder having the highest merit and the Microsoft decoder check also showing them as the default decoders.

Did a full re-install still getting the error, crap.

I found a program that solves the issue, but it's barely a fix for the issue.

This thread addresses the same issue and has an easy fix (provided you never want to use the Sage Decoder)

I am having the same problem. I tried the other method of unregistering the Sagetv codec in the other post but I am still getting the same message. I am using Component out from my video card since my PS3 is using the only HDMI port on the tv right now. Could this be the problem?

Yes, component is limited to 480p for DVDs due to CSS licensing restrictions.

I use component out, and I fixed my CSS error, it's not because of the output. It's because SageTV installs MPEG-2/DVD directshow filters with default merits higher than any other ds filters. Except the SageTV ds filters don't support playback of encrypted MPEG-2 files, those found on any store-bought DVD.

Here is the filter manager I used. After readjusting merits and a couple of reboots, I got Nvidia back as the default in both WMP & SageTV. The true tests are if you can play a store-bought DVD in WMP, and if you set MPEG-2 & DVD filters in SageTV to default and get the Nvidia icon during playback.
