Java out of memory errors while viewing pictures?
It's simply amazing to me that my Sage system can play super high-def 1080p movies but PUKES on pictures from my camera.
I know it's gotta be the java. 2 questions: 1. How can I increase the amount of memory java is allowed to use (using the latest 1.6 version) 2. How can I get my pictures to be displayed in wide screen mode? Here's a snippet of the debug log: Fri 11/2 13:15:26.458 Loaded font cache info for MetaFont[Arial, size=16, style=1, height=18.398438, ascent=14.746094, descent=3.1289062, leading=0.5234375] numGlyphs=1674 maxGlyph=234 Fri 11/2 13:15:26.460 Rendered new font to cache index=0 font=java.awt.Font[family=Arial,name=Arial,style=bold,size=16] Fri 11/2 13:15:26.460 Creating DirectX9 Texture from memory w=128 h=128 Fri 11/2 13:15:37.006 setUI(sage.b2@1044daf[Picture Slideshow]) histIdx=2 uiHistory=[sage.b2@8518d4[Dynamic Menu by nielm], sage.b2@16dc3e6[Picture Library], sage.b2@1044daf[Picture Slideshow]] Fri 11/2 13:15:37.007 PicLib beforeMenuUnLoad Fri 11/2 13:15:37.007 Picture library released Fri 11/2 13:15:37.103 PicSlide beforeMenuLoad Fri 11/2 13:15:37.112 Calling init Fri 11/2 13:15:37.112 Reading 1107 pictures Fri 11/2 13:15:37.117 Picture library initialized Fri 11/2 13:15:37.131 ImageUtils loading binary data length=3667507 Fri 11/2 13:15:37.714 ImageUtils creating BI copy sun.awt.image.ToolkitImage@656758 w=4000 h=3000 freeMem=27697104 totalMem=198316032 Fri 11/2 13:15:38.168 ERROR loading image of:java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space Fri 11/2 13:15:38.168 ImageUtils creating scaled masked copy width=4000 height=3000 option=null BufferedImage@197f158: type = 2 DirectColorModel: rmask=ff0000 gmask=ff00 bmask=ff amask=ff000000 IntegerInterleavedRaster: width = 16 height = 16 #Bands = 4 xOff = 0 yOff = 0 dataOffset[0] 0 Fri 11/2 13:15:38.721 ImageUtils creating scaled masked copy width=2048 height=1536 option=null BufferedImage@132c515: type = 2 DirectColorModel: rmask=ff0000 gmask=ff00 bmask=ff amask=ff000000 IntegerInterleavedRaster: width = 4000 height = 3000 #Bands = 4 xOff = 0 yOff = 0 dataOffset[0] 0

Opus, I'm rebooting now to see if works. In the meantime, you know of any way to view pictures in wide-screen mode? I now drop out of Sage and use ACDSEE to view my collection of pictures because it automatically scales them to the full screen output setting, which is a multiple of 16 x 9.
The Sage picture viewer keeps them in 4x3. Thanks for the help for the Java thing! Shawn

What version of SageTV are you using? Do you have the correct setting in Detailed Setup -> Multimedia -> Display Aspect Ratio Settings? And, in the photo browser's Slideshow Options dialog, you can choose to Enlarge Pictures to Fill the Screen.

I did check the "Enlarge Pictures to fill the screen" option. My pictures are the only thing that give me bars on the right and left. Any other ideas what I could check? Shawn

By the way, the Java Heap memory setting did fix my original problem, so thank you very much.

I've tried 16 x 9 (how it was), 16 x 10, and now even 4 x 3 and the pictures all still have bars on the left & right.
The picture are from my 12 megapixel camera and are 4000 x 3000. If that helps.

But are the pictures being shown in their proper ratio, or does the image look stretched?
The image should be sized to fit the screen such that the entire image is visible and it doesn't look stretched incorrectly -- you can end up with blank areas on the screen because the image doesn't have a ratio that matches the display. - Andy

Well, I can't explain the "why", but here's what I did to fix it. In Detailed Setup -> Multimedia -> Display Aspect Ratio Settings I set it to "4 x 3" (even though the TV is a 16 X 9 wide screen flat panel).
Now the pictures display properly. I have to use the 16 x 9 display option though when watching videos. Life isn't perfect, but it's getting better all the time. A friend of mine who's working on his doctorate stopped by today and had a billion questions and was blown away by Sage. Too bad I was paranoid something would quit working during the demo. Aaah, Sage. It's not quite ready for non-pc people.
