Save recorded files as .ts

Can SageTV write a .ts file instead of .mpg when recording a show? If so, where can I make this setting?

mmc/encode_digital_tv_as_program_stream=false in the sage.properties file.

However I believe it's been recommended against doing that, recording to tranport streams isn't officially supported anymore.

Why are you looking to record to a transport stream anyway?

.ts format is the native format coming from my STB (over firewire). If I'm not mistaken, this would prevent transcoding of the stream and give me exactly what is coming from the STB.

If you're recording over firewire, its using a network encoder and Sage doesn't touch that. So the files may say .mpg, but they are transport streams (unless you set up your graph to convert).

In addition the "transcoding" done from transport to program stream is lossless, it doesn't change the video or audio stream at all, just how their packaged.

I'm confused then why most all mpg editing programs (VideoReDo as an example) report the mpg file has errors.

May well have come that way out of the box. Crack it open with TSReader and see what it says.

maybe it did come out of the box that way. However, 100% of the files recorded with CapDVHS are editable with VideoReDo while only about 60% of SageTV files can be loaded and edited.

I'm searching for a solution which will make SageTV files 100% as well.

I don't know why that would be. I'm able to edit 100% of my HD recordings from Sage with VideoRedo. (Probably over 20 HD recording per week.) I create a videoredo project file and very quickly, with just a little tweaking, have the file edited with the commercials removed. Only a couple of instances I couldn't but the recording itself was bad. QS cleaned it up some but not enough.

Does this method work with the HDHomerun also?

I use Zoomplayer to play everything. I'd prefer that my Sage HDHomerun recordings have the .ts extension so that I could configure Zoomplayer playback with different splitters/decoders, separately from SD .mpg files from my Hauppauge 250.

Based on this posting I would recomend against changing it from true.
Recommend Against changing this

I HIGHLY recommend AGAINST changing this property (or other ones of the same name):

encode_digital_tv_as_program_stream

Please leave it at the default of true. There's been lots of support issues/bugs from people where changing this setting was the sole cause.

If it is for use of the recordings in another media player then be prepared for possible issues playing them in Sage. YMMV.

Thanks, but I never play files in Sage, so that's not a concern for me.

So to answer your original question-yes. At one time it was being used to see what produced the best timeline compatible output and what worked best for people.

I like the one consistent user interface for me and other users to use. I still start ZP 6 b2 every so often just to see how it's coming along. And since they're both using the same filters I don't see that much difference between them.

You need to stop the Sage service or quit Sage completely. If you look at your properties file your changes probably weren't saved.

nope. killed the process, checked the file, says

"mmc/encode_digital_tv_as_program_stream=false"

restarted Sage, tried recording, .mpg output. I'm using a beta build, maybe that has something to do with it? No idea, just throwing that out there.

Because it shows up in two places (three for the HDHR) Where you found it and
Code:
mmc/encoders/-2085315735/100/0/encode_digital_tv_as_program_stream=true
mmc/encoders/-2085315736/100/0/encode_digital_tv_as_program_stream=true
In the actual encoder line for each tuner.
