Help! SageTV will not start all of a sudden!

All of a sudden when I try to start SageTV, when the initial SageTV spalsh
screen messages reach "Initialising SageTV Core", SageTV exits.

After a bit of trouble shooting, SageTV starts only if I remove my
Sage.properties.
After trying to configure SageTV from scratch, SageTV also exits when I
reach the point in the Wizzard for adding a new capture source.

So it seems that something hardware related to my capture devices is
causing this. I uninstalled all capture card drivers but SageTV still refuses to start!

There is a Java error file generated. Even previous versions from backups exhibit the same behaviour.

Has anyone experienced anything similar over time?

I am stuck!

The Java error file is as follows:

#
# An unexpected error has been detected by Java Runtime Environment:

It's crashing in the file format parser. There's going to be a corrupted recording or file that's causing this. Look for any really small files in your recording directory; those are more likely culprits. It will also most likely be a very recently created file. With a little investigation you should be able to find the file that's causing the problem.

PLEASE SAVE the file and submit a bug report as well to http://sagetv.com/bugs.html so we can get the file from you and fix the issue.

Thanks Jeff. My heart went to its right place.

I already filed a report. I will investigate all suspicious files and find the culprit!

Lucas,

When you get it working again, you might want to invest in disk imaging software. Take an image of your C-drive every month or two, then you can easily recover in about 20 minutes.

Imaging software might not protect you if you system board dies. I could not recover with imaging when my system board died. VMware would probably work to protect against a system board failure.

Imaging software has saved me many days of rebuilding. It is cheap protection from computer software problems, especially if you don't want long extended downtime and frustration!

Dave,

I 've been using Acronis for the last 3 years.

I have backups of my C-Drive. Obiviously in this case I restored previous versions to see if they made a difference. They didn't. In my case, my mind did not go to the screwed up recording file cause but rather to the hardware.

The recording file cause makes sense since my recording drive is not imaged so I will easily find the recent file which caused the mayhem.... I wish I read the java error file more carefully.

Lucas,

I understand now...

It would be tough to image all the drives!

SysInternal's process monitor may help with this: set it to log all file opens for the SageTV process, and the last file(s) opened may be the culprits...

In the end it was quite easy. There were 3 recent partial recording files which after deleting them one by one. I found which caused the crash. After removing it, SageTV started!

Qian already found the location of the problem.

Thanks for all the support guys.

This is why it's great to be part of the SageTV community.
