Choppy audio & video on Sage server but not using WMP or through MediaMVP

Hardware:
ABIT Fatality F190-HD mobo
Intel Core2 6420
2 gigs ram
ATI Radeon Xpress 1200 series (on mobo)
Realtek hidef built in audio
Hauppauge PVR-150
Sage 6.1.9.146

If I play a recording through MVP client or on this machine through WMP playback is fine. When I play recordings (same recordings that work fie in WMP), imported videos or live TV in Sage I get sporadic/choppy audio and video. Have played around with other decoders and changed to overlay, changed audio settings but to no avail. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Additional Info-
I tried playing back sage recordings in CyberLink PowerDVD and had playback performance identical to what I got in Sage. The choppiness and audio crackling seems to be accentuated (but not caused by) mouse movement. I also noticed that the first time I played a Sage recorded file in WMP it began with performance that was even worse than in Sage but after maybe 5 seconds or so the file would play fine and replaying the same or other files in WMP worked flawlessly. I cannot seem to reproduce this initial poor perfomance in WMP however. It may have happened after switching some settings in Sage. Its almost as if WMP needed time to discover and load the correct decoder or something???? Any of this make any sense. Thanks again.

-More Additional Info-
I discovered (at 2am) that the whole problem appears to be my HD which is a WD My Book ES 500GB external which I have connected via eSATA. If I move recording to my old IDE drive everything works fine. I would have thought eSATA would be fast enough? I am not doing any hidef video.

I dont see anywhere what type of OS youre using. This sounds like a problem I'm having... its on Vista. The only thing that I have in common with you is the Realteck Hidef builtin Audio and multicore processor.
