Server specs?

I'm buying HW for a "future proof" (HD) server. Any comments on my receipe...?
What about a quiet power supply that will fit the case?
Any other thing I've missed/should reconsider?
Thanks in advance!

Other things you might want to consider, personal preference, is a SATA Backplane, and maybe sound absorption material.

I have a 5 SATA drive into 3 x 5.25" drive bays. Fairly nice to be able to pull hard drives out without ripping open the case. Here is one I found that could be used.

Good luck with your new system,

If your server will not be in your living room or in a room where people will be for extended periods of time, a really quiet power supply is not necessary. Any of the latest PSUs with a 12cm fan should be plenty quiet for a server. Don't go overboard 450 to 500watts are more than enough.

The case should take up to 10 disk drives so make sure the power supply has adequate SATA power connectors.

You could opt for a smaller OS drive or partition the OS drive into around 20Gb for the OS and the rest for videos.

The 320Gb drives could prove to be a bit small if you are into keeping lots of recordings and movies on disk.....

From the Nova-T , I take it you are in Europe/UK. How about a DVB-S2 card for satellite HD channels?

I just went with a very similar set up:
Same motherboard.
CPU 4400+ (Rather than 6000+)
[cheap] OCZ memory (still 2 gig)
Antec Sonata 3 case (comes with 500watt power supply) This case rocks, for an awesome price, and I figure I can get 6 hard drives in it. I put in a ultra quiet second fan for HD cooling.
120gig HD (os + static media- mp3s, pictures etc.) 500gig, 300 gig and 200 gig drives for recording. 80 gig drive for backups. I had all these already.
Hauppauge 250 and 500. (Had these)
LG DVD burner
Win XP Pro.
MVP (had this)

This was an upgrade of an old system and economy was a major factor in my parts choices for CPU, Case + Power supply and Memory. I considered the P180 case, but the fact that it costs more for the case than the Sonata 3 (with power supply) I just couldn't justify it, and the Sonata is quiet!

The most interesting two results is that I now have tons of processing power to do com-detect, transcoding etc. and my power usage has been reduced by a third! (see sig for old system - guess I need to update that)

Cheers, Corey

You should remember that windows software raid is not reliable. Why are you thinking about using raid in the first place?

thx
