Firewall issue...

OK, so today I turn my server on and i get a zone alarm warning that

LSA Service (export Version) (lsass.exe) wants to act as a server and accept connections from an IP address on port 500. I know for a fact that it was me at work by the IP address, so its not some rougue IP address... Actually the IP is my Firewall at work.

So.. my question is, do I ALLOW this since PLaceshifter seemed to work fine while I was there (when it wasn't allowed) and why does sage need this service? ...and why all of a sudden, I have been using placeshifter for like a month and never saw this dialog box before. WHy port 500???

Thanks,
Jeff

So in fact you don't know that it was you. All you know is that somebody at your workplace tried to connect to port 500.

Port 500 has nothing to do with Placeshifter. It's the IKE port used for setting up VPN connections. The LSA service is a Windows network logon service that (again) has nothing to do with Placeshifter.

Given all that, plus the fact that Placeshifter works, I see no reason to allow that connection. Maybe the network techs at your workplace can help you figure out who's trying to log onto your machine from inside their firewall. (Unless of course you don't want them to know you've been Placeshifting from work.)

Cool thanks for the heads up on the VPN stuff. It kinda makes sense now... because I VPN from my Mac Laptop to work, my mac laptop is the machine that has placeshifter on it and I placeshift from work to home. Since I never turn my server monitor on, that Hit on 500 could be from when I was vpning from home, NOT when I was placeshifting from work. The IP address was from our Cisco PIX address, NOT one of the NAT'd addresses it hands out when connecting to the internet from inside work. I am guessing there was confusion between my Netgear FVS124G prosafe firewall at home and the Cisco PIX at work.

I'll go over the theory with our router guy tomorrow.
