Lightweight and cheap AV software?
Good afternoon,
To-date, I'm still not running any type of antivirus software on my media center PC's. However, I'm thinking I should put something on my living room PC that is now also being used for very light web browsing. Are there any suggestions for a free/cheap AV application that's not a resource hog? I've been playing around with AVG Free Edition on my laptop, but I'm not liking the pop-up windows that appear when it downloads a new definition - I'm positive that will break my FSE display. Just curious if anyone had any thoughts... system is Windows 2003 Server. Thanks! -Jay

Who's your broadband provider? Most of them are now providing AV solutions for free, many of which run silently in the background.

I love AVast. For me it has been very light on resources and is very customizable.

Agreed on Avast, great product and the price is right...
![]() A lot of the ISPs here supply McAfee, and you don't want that on your HTPC...

And having re-read your original mail, you can change the settings to disable the download/upgrade progress bars... (control Center -> Update manager -> Properties
Check Do not Ask Uncheck Display Information

Thanks, Niel.... I may just go that route, since so far, AVG has worked well for me.

AVG worked well for me. I tried using it about a couple of years ago. At that time, I thought the GUI interface was a bit 'clunky', but it still worked. I have heard of systems getting screwed up with AVG, but that never happened to me. You might also add imaging software so that you can take periodic images to easily recover your system, if you have problems.
I use McAfee, because it is free from my cable provider, but it is a resource hog. But that shouldn't make much difference when I upgrade to a QX6700 quad-core if the prices drop next week. Dave |

Not a cheap alternative but, anyone try anything like this?
http://yoggie.com/node/30 I wouldn't think this would slow the pc at all. |
