Sound problems - comments please

I have a sony receiver (5 years ago it was high end). Output from the computer to the receiver is via optical cable.

When I turn on the receiver and go to a program or imported video or anything with sound. The sound waits approximately 2 minutes before coming on. The picture comes on immediately. After the sound does come on, then it is mostly fine for a while. If I turn off the receiver and turn it back on, the sound comes immediately. This would lead me to believe that it is a problem with the receiver. I checked to insure that it was not just SAGE. I minimized SAGE and brought up a video in windows media player and had the same problem..(2 minute delay for sound)..Once sound came on, I close the media player and opened SAGE. The sound was fine there also.

So, some where these is a delay... Any idea where I should look either in the computer audio output settings or the receiver input setting?


Also, mostly with DVD's (AC3 sound)...after about 30 minutes, the audio starts stuttering. It will stutter for about 3 or 4 minutes..Sometimes worse than others..Sometimes it will completely cut off for 2 or 3 minutes...Then it stops stuttering and plays the rest of the DVD fine. It also happens on HD or whenever there is AC3 sound.

I use Purevideo and the optical cable comes from my onboard realtek AC97 output to the receiver optical input.

ouch...sound drivers, maybe? what flavor of ac '97 audio?
