remote extender

Has anybody found a way to use an extender remotely.... kind of like the web server, except for the extender.

My daughter is going off to college. She could just use the webserver application., but then she would need to plug her computer into a TV for better viewing. So, I wondered if somehow the extender could work remotely. Obviously, I would need the extender to be able to find the main server at my house over the internet.

Given we have placeshifting and webservers and VNC, seems there must be a way to do this.

Thanks,

Gary Ellis

you likely don't have the bandwidth to stream the mpeg signal that an mvp will need?

Hmmmm.... I assumed that if the webserver could do it, then the MVP could also...

I'm sure there is a way to do it, may not be 100% within the rules. However, I'd be awful weary about opening ports that get accessed from a college campus. When I was in college half of my time was spent with packet sniffers and all other sorts of fun network equipment monitoring other peoples traffic, even though I shouldn't have been. I'm sure kids are much smarter with computers now than I ever was then, so even though it seems like a good idea, I wouldn't.

Placeshifter is what you need.

The MVP is meant to be run on the lan, it uses MPEG-2 at high-ish bitrates, easilly 4-8Mbps depending on your recording.

The webserver does it one of two ways, by transcoding/streaming video (requires VLC on the server) in MPEG-4 which the MVP can't handle, or by allowing you to download the file, the MVP has nowhere to store it.

Unless you've got a 10Mbps pipe all the way there, you're not going to have much success with the MVP over the internet.

If you've got a 10Mbps pipe, you could probably setup a VPN.
