I installed Vista and now get pretty much the same results as you. H.264 streams from the r5000-hd play well most of the time. I'm not sure why it works so much better, one would think just the opposite given the increased overhead of Vista vs XP.

Works under XP too
Just another little bit to confuse everyone.
I had been unable to get watchable playback of h.264 streams from my r5000 under Sage despite all kinds of tweaks. In desperation I switched to Vista because of another poster's success and - it worked for me too. Therefore, I assumed it was an XP problem. Well Vista is kind of a pain; the video drivers are nowhere near as mature as the XP drivers, and I couldn't get simultaneous SPDIF and analog sound out (which is useful for me driving several TVs). I also experienced well-known video-driver errors with my 7600GT card (search for nvlddmkm stopped responding in Windows Vista in google for info). That led me to buy a Nvidia 8500GT for around $100 and it worked well. But I still didn't care for the immature Vista drivers and lack of simultaneous SPDIF/analog audio. On a whim I re-imaged my XP setup and installed the drivers for the 8500GT and was pleased to discover smooth h.264 playback of my r5000 streams. Summary: 7600GT wouldn't work in XP but worked fine in Vista 8500GT works fine in either. |
