The Hauppauge Color Bars Are Back

My mainboard went bad on my main system, which runs SageTV. I had to rebuild a system from scratch using a different system board, since I could not restore the Ghost image to a different mainboard (unfortuately the Ghost image does not protect you when a mainboard goes bad and you don't have a similar replacement mainboard).

Now, those annoying PVR-350 color bars are back between programs. I can't remember how I got rid of them last time when I had that problem years ago. Does anyone have a good solution to getting rid of the PVR-350 color bars?

Dave

If you are using XP you dont have to start from scratch. You should try going to the repair console from the XP CD and repair your XP install by typing chkdsk /r , that has always worked for me when installing a new MB. If that doesnt work then there is a repair option in the setup from the XP CD that basically reinstalls XP over itself leaving the programs and registry pretty much intact. All you have to do is reinstall the service packs and updates.

I tried the repair option, and it just 'hung'. I did get to a command prompt, but I did not try the chkdsk /r method.

I will image my recent rebuilt for scratch, then try restoring back to the old mainboard image, then try the chkdsk /r method.

I heard that Acronis images can be applied to different hardware, but Ghost version 9 doesn't have that option. It would be nice if the image protected against a mainboard going bad.

Thanks for the chkdsk /r XP repair console suguestion!

Your welcome I dont think any kind of imaging would help with changing the MB. I think thats one of Microsofts ways of keeping you from ghosting the HD and installing it in every system in the house. There has only been one time that I replaced a MB and not had to repair windows, it was a miracle, but all the other times the chkdsk /r worked. Good luck to you.

I was thinking of restoring the old mainboard image onto my current hard drive. But in light of what you said, I will simply swap the old mainboard boot drive back in the system and try the chkdsk /r. Fortunately, I set aside my old mainboard boot hard drive without making any changes to it after the old mainboard failed! Again, thanks for the help!

I assume you are using the 350's TV-out feature, then its a hauppauge driver issue, you must've installed a different driver then the one you were using before.

Just curious, is the 350's TV-out working well for you? It has been widely confirmed that it does not work well.

The PVR-350 has been working fine for me. I use the S-video input from a cable box, and before that a satellite box. I did notice recently when I tried hooking it up directly to the cable TV, that the tuner is extremely insensitive. The signal is so weak that it is unusable. The tuner might have been defective a long time ago, since I never used it before.

I don't have the problems that many people reported with the PVR-350.

I recall now that I got rid of the color bars last time by using the Cayars STV, which had a feature to turn off the color bars. The color bars stayed off permanently after switching to the standard STV and the 16 x 9 STV.

I am going to try hooking up the old mainboard boot drive and running the Windows XP repair option to try to get it working again. I'm stuck using my lower-end computer for Sage TV till after July 22nd when the QX6700 quad core drops from $970 to about $530. I will replace the mainboard with a higher-end mainboard and get at least 2 gig 800 MHz memory.
