Direct SetTopBox Control w/IR Cable

I am using Scientific Atlanta Digital Cable Boxes w/PVR-500 and I have USB-UIRT.
I was going to build external emitters for my usb-uirt today when i noticed the back of my set top boxes have a 1/8" jack labeled "IR".
I'm wondering if there is perhaps a faster/more accurate way to change channels using the IR port.

Anyway to control my set top box with the IR port instead of using IR blaster?
Also if I go to radio shack anyone know if this IR LED works ok?

Most likely that IR port is for the CABLE BOX to control a VCR and not for you to control it. That's what it is on MOTO cable boxes anyway.

Ah I thought it might be for IR output, but there isn't really anything in the menus to configure it so I tossed that idea out. I thought it was more for a fancy tv that might change the channels on the set top box with the tv commands or something like that.
Or for a VCR to setup the channel on the set top box before it records etc.
