Sound Levels

Ever since I've had Sage the sound from different video formats have been at drastically different levels. I have the sound on my LCD TV all the way up, and watching the STB digital cable, Sage sound is at a normal 25%. For DVD playback, I have to turn Sage sound to 100% and still turn on my Receiver/Amp way up to get more sound, the same is true for OTA HD channels.

My Sage settings have Audio Renderer set to Default, and MPEG2 Audio Decoder set to SageTV MPEG Audio Decoder. I'm using my motherboards onboard sound that goes to the TV. The workstation motherboard is a Supermicro X7DAE, with AC97 Audio.

I'd like to get the volume set up so it's around the same range no matter what I'm watching or listening to. Any settings I'm missing?

Michael

I have seen this discussed before and I have seen this myself. Anything that is 5.1 encoded that is being played via analog, seems to come in quieter. I can't remember why, but there is a reason for it. I switched to all digital on my full clients (using digital coax between the the receiver and the Sage Clients) and haven't had any issues with the OTA HD being quieter. although to be honest I don't play DVD's thru Sage.

Are you using AC3Filter for DVD playback? ...and if so, what version?

Cuz, I upgraded my AC3Filter to ver 1.3 from 1.1 and in the release notes over at Alex Vigovsky's site said the newer version is 6db louder. I have to admit, it's now a lot better for watching DVD's in 5.1 AC3. ...since I'm a little hard of hearing [the old rock band era] I no longer have to peg the volume in Sage to hear a DVD.....so you might want to update your AC3Filter.

If you're not sure what version you have, you can always download the free Radlight Filter manager [google it]... which is a pretty handy tool... then look under directshow filters and AC3Filter. Here you can click to the properties page and tweak the individual channels for AC3 audio.

Anyway, I know the upgraded version 1.3b is way better for my deaf ears.

YMMV

Peace,

Wirenut
