Ugh; i don't know what I just did, but I have destabilized the heck out of that box. I would go into details but I'm too bugged right now.

I'm reformatting that whole box, and backing down to 3 SATA drives only on it. I can't do it until 8:30pm as that's when the kids go to sleep.

ACK!

Thanks very much for all your helpful advice as I repeatedly shoot myself in the foot. Hopefully I learn some lessons this time around.

Oh, I had all IDE drives until this machine. I think I need to walk away for several hours, as i'm probably making stupid mistakes in my frustration to make this work.

This is all clearly a hardware or config level thing as I couldn't even get the DTVControl program to work.

I was under the impression that the IDE connection transfer speed is only as fast as the slowest IDE device on the same cable. If that is true, then yes this could be a problem.

That is exactly what I was pointing to. That a hard drive should never be run on the same chain as an optical drive for that reason. It has been awhile since I did any research in this, and I think it should really only affect you when the optical drive is actually being used, but I still wouldn't do it if I were you. I would go solely SATA and at this point I would reinstall everything.

I didn't realize that about the IDE channels.

Regardless, I took it out, spat on it, and am in the middle of a full XP reinstall including low-level format. I have only SATA disks left, and the only ones i'll record on are the 16MB cache ones. I believe I'm currently on reboot #89, damn why can't this be easier.

Thanks again to all of you for this help, hopefully in several hours it all works again.

Let us know how it turns out. I think getting that drive off the IDE chain will really help. If that doesn't figure it out, we'll try something else.....
