Pardon the ignorance but does SageTV record everything??
Pardon my ignorance but I have Sage up and running beautifully. Problem is, say I'm watching t.v. for 3 hours and SageTV is running. All that time it is recording what I'm watching and stores it in my directory which I have set. When I schedule a recording it records just fine but the live t.v. is always recording and alwyas saving onto my hard drive. Everytime I change a channel it'll start recording in a new file if that makes sense. How do I make it so that it only records when I schedule it too and have a smaller buffer than 2 hours. Currently at the bottom, the bar extends to 2 hour longs so it is recording in 2 hour intervals at a time. Can this be made smaller? The way it is now my hard drive gets full of live recordings which I dont even want to record. Am I understanding this correctly? Hope someone can help me out here. Thanks.

This is a common new user misunderstanding. A PVR will always record what you are watching. So the bar at the bottom will be the length of the current show. Sage takes it one step further and records everything you watch (actually a PVR has to record everything, only difference is Sage does not delete it instantly). Sage will only use the amount of space you specify and will delete items on its own. Items recorded from just watching will be the first to go after fragment files.
Most users create a partition for Sage files. I have two drives dedicated myself. You would not want to just specify a directory on a shared drive or you will run into fragmentation issues. Good luck! |

What you are seeing is the intended operation. If you are just watching TV with it and changing channels and such, it will take up space with recordings and delete them as it needs to. You can change the amount of space that Sage uses in the settings.
If you have the Intelligent Recording option checked, it will record stuff it thinks you like according to your previous viewing history. If you have this option unchecked, then it wont do this but it will still record shows as you are watching them. You can put SageTV to sleep and it won't record anything except what you tell it to record. |

I have a dedicated HTPC machine so I'm not worried about my disk space. Is SageTV smart enough to know if my hard drive is full and I schedule a recording, that it deletes the live t.v. that is saved on my hard drive that wasn't a recorded program? I have a 120 gig HD but seems to fill up pretty fast when its recording everything.

Yeah it will handle all that. Here is the deletion order that is done as needed....
fragment files watched files intelligent recordings favorites based on recording date (may use some intelligence for this too) manual recordings After a bit you will get used to it. It is pretty nice to be able to go back to just about anything that you have watched (limited by drive space). Many times I have just watched something and later discussed it with the wife and she was disappointed she missed it. I just grin and pull it up... Everyone asks that question btw ![]() |
