Any sugegstion on Motherboard

I recently upgraded to a TYAN S5112 Motherboard using a Intel 478 with 1.5GB of memory. I filled it with two Hauppage 250 cards. The system has become very sluggish when watching a video. Its pauses and I see the three Sage circle logo thing. Im running on one Hitachi 500GB drive for the videos only. Between menus its fast but not when a video is playing.

I dont know what can be causing it.. Im thinking of going to a new Motherbaord to get rid of this problem. Can anyone suggest something that is working for them that can accept a Intel 478 cpu (northwood type), at least 3 PCI slots and does raid 5. Any one know of anything they can recommend thats works with sage6

Thanks
Andy

Sorry you are having problems with this board. I use the exact same motherboard on my "headless" SageTV server and I have not had any problems with it. Are you using it as a recording server only or are you trying to playback video as well. If you are trying to playback video that could be your problem the built in Video is an ATI Rage128 class and as such is not really a good match for video playback I don't think. Also since this board does not have an AGP port you may be better suited with a motherboard upgrade. Maybe an ASUS P4C800(Intel 478) or along that linage anyway? This is another board that I own and works well for playback because I can put my nVidia 6600 AGP card in it for playback.

Hi,

No raid 5 on this board (raid 0 or 1 only), but I can tell you it will work well with sage. I have two of these boards (see sig) and have been very pleased with them.

I think you hit on something. When I use my client it works fine no pauses or pauses. When I use it from the server in my office then it shows the pauses. But it seems to record fine. Then its the video card. See I went crazy changing drives. I bought it because I went to a promise raid 5 system which needed pci-x. Im going to see what ASUS has to offer with raid maybe just go that route. Thanks Andy

ASUS is good but the P4C800 I mentioned isn't even sold any more and the Intel board that Jesse mentioned has similar specs. So unless you want to stick to ASUS for other reasons you could get a proven board that works rather than taking a chance on a ASUS version that you don't know about.

I now have a PC using an ASUS M2N-MX with DDR2-6400 memory and an AMD 4200 dual core. Very pleased. BIOS has all the features I want in terms of booting and so on. AMD CPU runs cool and is really, really fast. Transcoding and burning DVD simultaneously.

You might want a motherboard with more slots depending on your purposes.

I am a devout AMD supporter because: "What would PC CPU chips cost were there no competition for Intel?" And the AMDs work well.

Sage client runs fine despite the on-board nVidia 6100 graphics chips.

Tyan MB

Well I took the advice of others and my wife's yelling. I have decided to use the TYAN mb as the server 'headless' in the corner and use my client to communicate to it rather then using the server directly.

Now the problem is getting comskip to work on the client, im having problems but ill post it else ware.

Thanks for everyone's response. It works fine no sluggishness it must of been the TYAN video card.
