Seeing that CoreAVC is much cheaper than buying PowerDVD 7, I think I'll go with that route.

Which version of CoreAVC would you recommend, Standard or Professional?

Edit, Better yet, how do you buy it?! Looks like their store has been down for several days...
Not only is it cheaper but you'll get substantially better performance with it too. They don't lie on their website about being the fastest. To give a quick comparison, what runs around 60% in CyberLink, runs around 25% in CoreAVC for me. It's that substantial.

How do you buy it? You can't right now. They took their order pages down in mid Feb and haven't returned. Where did they go? No idea. Something fishy going on over there at CoreCodec...

Lastly, I would like to clarify something about x264. x264 is the open source implementation of H.264. It's simply another AVC codec LIKE H.264.

Cheers!

Thanks, Travis, I had heard that same comment, I believe, on the Doom9 forums. Well, here's hoping that the store returns soon...with a baby on the way, and an AVC camcorder, it's going to be hard to resist watching all the footage in HD, in the living room.

I guess I will have to wait. I posted a question on the CoreAVC forums, and got little response to it. Not a word from one of the developers. I was looking for a trail version, which they also do not have yet.

Hopefully, we'll see something in the next couple weeks.

What I heard from the SageTV devs is that H.264 playback won't be complete in v6.1, but as you can tell there has been progress in detecting it. Playback support is still scheduled for v6.2.

Excellent. Well, considering there isn't any editing software out either for the footage, I consider SageTV to be on the cutting edge.

I think it's getting very close. As long as I can play the footage natively in SageTV by end of the year, that will be nice.

Travis, CPU utilization with Cyberlink's AVC decoder on my computer is only slightly higher than CoreAVC, about 5%. But I've got a fairly new ATI video card with AVIVO (see sig).

Heh, with a nice card like that probably so but for me and my 6600GT... it makes a pretty big difference.

Is the video performance with 264 good with that card? I have the same one. I thought I might have to upgrade, to get stutter free video, at least, for AVC video.

It's not bad... I am running a pretty slow CPU all things considered and I suspect I would do better with a new CPU than a new card. I have an AMD Athlon 3400 right now.

720p AVC plays perfectly fine. 1080p is on the edge, hence my CPU statement above. All other media is fine though.

Cheers,

Mine is only a 3000. Time for a 4400 dual core? These files would be 1440x1080i. Wonder if that will present a challenge for displaying on a 1080p screen?
