Sage just deleted a boatload of unwatched -- en masse

I sat down to watch some unwatched favorites, and found that Sage had gone through a deleted 10 - 15 recorded favorites that had not been watched.

I generally have each favorite set up to keep 5 - 6 shows and auto delete the rest. I've been running sage (6.0.19) like this for 3 or 4 months without issue. I'm fine with unwatched shows rolling off the end, but in this case, it went through and deleted all the unwatched favorites and didn't honor the "keep 5".

Case in point: Rules of Engagement - I had 3 episodes recorded and unwatched (actually forgot I had it recording as a favorite) and when I sat down the other day, all three were gone. Rules of Engagement is actually set to "keep all", Auto Delete = Yes.

Last time I looked (via nielm web interface), the disk was getting close to full, but I thought Sage would gradually bring the usage down as it needed it.

So, a couple of things:

1. Can anyone provide a description (or is it in the manual) of how Sage manages auto delete / disk space?

2. Does Sage keep or generate a log of what it deletes when / why?

It is a bit frustrating.

Thanks.

Ray.

to enable logging

To enable logging with SageTV,
make sure that SageTV is completely shut down, set debug_logging=TRUE in the sage.properties file on the server or if that line isn't in the sage.properties file type it on a new line.

This will only enable logging from now on ... the log files are in the form sagetv_*.txt with * being 0 thru nine and the lower the number the more recent the log file.

Hope this helps,
Bobby

I think you're a little confused as to what those settings do. The setting you're referring to is "keep at most" not "keep at least". So by having it at 5 that means Sage will keep at most 5 episodes. There is no minimum number of shows to keep.

Allowing Sage to auto delete when space is needed means that Sage can delete all of that particular favorite.

There are STV's out there or extensions that allow you to see what Sage thinks as to what's to be deleted next.

Appendix C in the PDF manual covers this topic.

Also make sure that there isn't some sort of undelete utility, such as Norton protected recycle bin, active on the recording drive. Such utilities can make it look like the deleted file is still taking up disk space, so after SageTV deletes a file to make room for a new recording, it thinks there isn't enough space yet, so it deletes another... and another... and ...

^ The choices Sage makes can be somewhat surprising, I have come to think - so, either make sure that Sage does not get to make the decision (by deleting yourself) or archive shows to must not be deleted.

I do both.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Norton Undelete was active on the drive, so I've turned it off for the drive where the TV shows are stored.

I'll crack open the manual and check it out.

I'm considering adding another drive for storage, either a USB external drive or making a network drive on my NASLITE box available. So, maybe that will give me a little more breathing room.

Thanks.

Ray.
