While we're talking great deals, there are also some good ones at Newegg:

Maxtor 500GB SATA for $139.99 (Free 3 day shipping)

and while not as good of a deal the 750GB'ers are starting to come down
Seagate SATA 750GB $339

Maybe I can talk the wife into a few upgrades for the Sage box when "Uncle Sugar" sends back some of the $$$ he stole from me last year.

what's a good low cost RAID-5 PCI or PCIe controller card to use to connect some of these big disks to?

If I start with a 3 disk RAID-5 and outgrow it, I just add a 4th drive and the controller will rebuild, right? Not traumatic?

If I go RAID-1, I have no way to add storage, right?

RAID 0+1 is too scary.

XP Pro supposedly allows for all of this (rather than having to use Win 2K server)

After a lot of reading, I don't think I want to go the Linux SMB route with ext2 or ext3 file systems in an NTFS centric world. Horror stories abound, e.g., with the new D-Link NAS and ext3.

I've gotten some great deals on new OEM 3Ware cards on eBay. 9500S-12 for $350.00. 7506-12 for 202.00 (used but mint condition).
