Recording SD with HDHomeRun

I haven't decided yet on how to use any HD content, so, I will stick to SD for now: I have read there might be some issues with sound/volume/ac3.

Anything else to consider?

Edit: I do have come to hate my HD STB. While it still gives me HBO and SHO in HD, it really sucks, and it sure is not getting any better.

The only "SD" you can record with the HDHR is a digital (QAM) simulcast of an SD station (if you even get any). It records digital only...or did I misunderstand your question?

I think this is related to the question I had about HDHR recording digital SD channels. I have a motorola DCT-2000 STB providing access to SD digital channels through Charter (channel 100 and higher) and am hoping that HDHR will also decode at least some of these (obviously, non-premium channels.) Even if I only get "clear" HD content, that'll be ok--digital SD would just be a bonus.

Before the HD extender arrives (I hope) I'm simply trying to improve PQ for a second (or third tuner).

That's all.

As Polypro has said, you can only record unencrypted digital channels. In my case (Comcast in the SF Bay area), channels up to 75 are analog (which HDHR can not record) and there are several SD digital channels from 120 on up. Unfortunately, most of these are encrypted. The only unencrypted digital SD channels I get are PBS (including PBS world, PBS life and PBS kids), a couple of local independent channels and a couple of 24-hour weather channels that are associated with local network affiliates. I also get the HD digital versions of PBS, NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox. The rest of the digital channels are encrypted and can only be tuned through the STB. With an OTA antenna, I can get the Sacramento versions of PBS, NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox and CW in HD, some SD simulcasts plus a handful of independent SD channels.

I hate using a STB too, but it's the only way I can get channels like sci-fi and BBC America. I have it hooked up to my PC via s-video (and a serial cable for tuning), but the video quality is horrible compared to the digital channels captured by the HDHR.

I can get about two dozen SD (audio volume seems a bit lower) and eight HD channels. Not bad.
