Upgraded Java and now GUI wont start

Hello,
I have been using v6, service mode for a while, with jave 1.4x something.
I needed to upgrade my version of java for something else to a 5 version.
This I have done.

Now when I try to launch the GUI, I get the first loading box, and then when it should normally go be replaced by sage, it crashes to desktop, no messages or anything.

I appreciate how vague this is, but any ideas please?

Thanks.

Did you uninstall the old version of Java?

Try uninstalling Java from your system completely:
If necessary (after uninstalling Java using 'Add/Remove Programs'), also manually delete Sun-related and Java-related files from the following locations:
- C:\Program Files\
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
- C:\Documents and Settings\(USERNAME)\Application Data
- C:\Documents and Settings\(USERNAME)\Local Settings\Application Data
- [HKEY_CURRENT_USER]/Software (using RegEdit)
- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE]/Software (using RegEdit)

Then install the latest version of either Java 5 (1.5 Update 10) or Java 6.

I'm using Java 6 with SageTV 6.0.19, and it works fine (except my 'No Signal' issue, but this isn't Java's fault!)

Steve.

Avoid Java 5 because of known problems and go right to Java 6

Yah, I don't know why Sun hides V6 when it has been released, and is no longer Beta, IIRC.

Here is the link, http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp to get V6 if you need it.

I thought that too.

But the latest version from the Sun website shows as version 1.6.0-b105 when installed, so I'm guessing the b stands for beta.

Still seems pretty solid though.

For me it downloaded jre-6-windows-i586.exe

Unfortunately it didn't fix the problem and the gui still wont start.

Just went back to 1.42_13 and all is working, apart from the other thing that needed the later version.
Oh well.

No-the b stands for build. beta was spelled out in the beta versions.

If these "other things" you're hinting at are third-party customizations for SageTV, try removing them all and running a stock install of Sage with the later Java version. If that works, then try adding back your customizations one at a time to figure out which one is the culprit. Some very old customizations are known not to work properly with newer versions of Java.

You might also turn on debug logging (debug_logging=TRUE in your Sage.properties and SageClient.properties) to see what turns up in the debug log when you hang during startup.
