Periodical Crashing whilst stopping playback
Hi All,
I decided to update v5 and go with v6.0.18.118 and im running into crashing instances. I did a complete clean install of v6 (other than wiz.bin),and generally all is working fine, the only real issue i get is the very slow (8-20sec+) to return back the sageTV Recordings Menu when i press Stop, somtimes SageTV will crash out that this point also: Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: None Event ID: 1000 Date: 27/12/2006 Time: 17:27:45 User: N/A Computer: HTPC Description: Faulting application sagetv.exe, version 6.0.13.1, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00001010. If i run debug logging i see the following error in the logs that does not appear anywhere else in the logs over many hours Wed 12/27 17:27:47.189 Error communicating with server:java.lang.NullPointerException Wed 12/27 17:27:47.189 Cleaning up c/s connection Wed 12/27 17:27:47.189 NetworkManager CommunicationFailure : /127.0.0.1:4011 type=1 Wed 12/27 17:27:47.190 MsgSend thread terminating for /127.0.0.1:4011 I currrently have Java 1.5.0_06 installed (using getstatus plugin/webserver) Tried with video thumbnails enabled and disabled via (video_thumbnail_generation=true / FALSE),still sluggish with either, still periodically crashes. Sage v5 never crashed a single time that i can remember,so i think my hardware is fine, also tried running with and without the sagetv service enabled

I have seen a similar problem on a new client I built. Thought it was just a random fluke but it happened a couple times now. Didn't have logging on though. It only seemed to start after installing 6.0.18 release version though. My original install was a version of the 6.x beta

I also get very consistent crashes when stopping playback if I use Overlay
combined with Nvidia Decoder...which is a real shame because it looks great. I don't get crashes with Nvidia post processor or with Sagetv decoder or if I use any other mode (vmr7, vmr9). 3D accel makes no difference. Bug submissions haven't helped. The problem can be easily reproduced by playing and stopping a show until it crashes...usually crashes within 10 stops. It happens across multiple sagetv versions and multiple java versions. It has happened to two of my computer builds. It is of note; however, that the problem didn't start until I upped Java from the default install of 1.4.2_11 to ver6. Removing ver6 and going back to the previous version doesn't fix. I tried ripping out all java files and all registry entries having to do with java and reinstalling 1.4.2, but still crashes now. I only upped Java because Nielm's webserver wouldn't work... oddly now it works, but I get playback stop crashes. So, for me, Overlay + Nvidia decoder + touch_java_in_any_way = playback stop crashes (until reinstall windows) Currently, I'm using vmr9 in FSE mode which looks ok (nice and smooth), but the colors, sharpness, and contrast are inferior to overlay on my ATI 8500dv card. -Tundra |

Sorry to rejuvenate an old thread, but it sounds like the same issue I have. I might be able to offer more info to help identify the cause of this.
I run Sage 6.0.19 on a Celeron 2.8, XPSP2, Java 6. I also use Nvidia decoder, overlay mode on an ATI card and PQ is indeed quite nice. This machine has been a (rock solid) dedicated SageTV box for a couple years now (version 4,5, and now 6). Since upgrading to version 6, Sage crashes periodically/frequently while performing a seek option of some sort (skip forward, skip back, pause). Sage just disappears. It's quite reproduceable, I find I now try not to ff/rew which obviously isn't the best solution. Anybody else seen this? |

I never had an issue with ff/rew...my issue was always with 'stop'.
Nvidia decoders, plus overlay, plus hardware acceleration enabled on the nvidia properties page consistently gave me the crashes. Without nv hardware accel = no crashes, but unsmooth playback...unacceptable. Eventually, I gave up on Overlay mode altogether. I now use default (vmr7) and have it looking nearly as good as overlay did. I still think java is related somehow, as the problem didn't occur until I touched java... |

I looked into the windows logs and found that it was a stop error in the video driver. I also found references (I forget where now) to detection of a thread hang in the video driver. I tried reverting to Forceware 84.21, but it still locked up. (Though my picture quality and smoothness of playback improved dramatically. Even my wife commented.) Over the weekend I tried switching to VMR9. It has been about 3 days and I haven't seen another lockup. It's still too early to tell, but I'm optimistic that I have managed to bypass the lockup problem. Another nice surprise is that I get smooth playback in VMR9 without having to enable FSE. In case anyone cares, this is on a client with an Athlon64 X2 4400+, 1Gb RAM, and an Nvidia 6600GT video card running at 1080p. My software configuration is SageTV 6.0.18, JRE 1.6.0, Purevideo decoder, and Forceware driver v84.21. Aloha, Mike

I have had this issue for a long time on one of my sage client boxes and eventually filed a bug report. Shortly after that the hard drive in that box died, so I had to rebuild the box. No more issues since then..

I have recently been experiencing this same problem in SageTV. Currently I am running Ver 6.3.2.156 and Java ver 1.6.0_03 under Windows Vista Ultimate. I was having this problem while running Sage ver 6.2 and it started a couple months ago.
Sage will crash at the end of playing a show (as it is returning to the menu) or as I delete a show. This doesn't happen every time a show ends or when I delete a show however, It does happen often. I found this thread because I did a search on NTDLL.DLL. SageTV was the faulting application and NTDLL.DLL was the faulting mdoule. Looks like it has been a while since anyone has posted to this thread. unfortunately, no one has posted a definate solution. From some other similar posts, it appears that uninstalling Sage, deleting the Sage folder, and reinstalling Sage may help. This is what I'm about to do after this post. I do intend to reuse the Sage settings files so I don't lose all the metadata for my recordings and favorites and all the other stuff I've changed but don't remember. |

OK, I didn't uninstall/re-install SageTV.
The short of it is, I rechecked some of my settings in Sage. Specifically, weather I was using overlay or VMR9 & 3D Acceleration. Some of the other posts indicated they had this and it seemed to make a difference. Mine was set to Overlay and I changed it to VMR9. It may be a bit early, but I haven't had Sage crash since I made the change. The long of it. I have been using the Overlay mode since I first started with SageTV about 2 years ago. At the time I don't think VRMx would even work for me. I was using a dual monitor setup with an Epson projector as the secondary monitor. Whatever video was being played showed full screen on the secondary display even when it was windowed on the primary. There was no mouse cursor, no OSD just the video, full screened on the secondary display. If I needed to see the OSD I could look at the primary monitor. In May, I upgraded the OS to Vista Ultimate. My video card is an ATI AIW 9600. After the upgrade, the overlay mode wouldn't work anymore. I forget the exact version of the Catalyst drivers but I do remember updating them a few times since then. I do kinda remember trying the overlay mode again after one of the Catalyst updates and it worked. I didn't have any problems at that time and left it set that way, otherwise I would have changed back to VMR9. I'm not using the projector anymore because the colors are not displaying correctly, so using overlay mode isn't an issue as it once would've been. I will try to post back in this thread in a couple days to confirm weather or not using VMR9 has solved my crash problem as it has for some others. |

Since changing from overlay to VMR9, I haven't had SageTV crash. Been crash free for about a week.
