DVD's not playing MVP..please help

I finally upgraded to 6.14, (happy to pay the $40) ..first, I'm not sure if I need to do anything else to make my MVP work right..

When I plugged the MVP in I still had the old screen. I then went to setup > detailed setup> advanced and clicked on the same STV that my main computer has loaded after installing the new version. This seemed to get me the right screens and functions. (Not sure though)...

Then my main computer would not play DVD's..Kept giving me an error...I saw the Dshowplayer.dll thing...I loaded the Dshowplayer.dll, then realized it needed to be in the SageTV folder...I copied it there..Of course there was already one there, so I had to rename the one there and then copy the new one there. Now DVD's worked, but sound is really low on them...

I then went to my MVP and clicked on DVD's..It certainly seems to be trying to play the DVD, but actually gives me the same error message I got on the main computer before doing the DSHOWPLAYER.dll thing...Do I need to do something else to my MVP or do I need another copy of the dshowplayer.dll in another place also?

Thanks,

Gary Ellis

well after playing around with this most of the day..I finally read the fine print. I large print says that DVD's work now through to the MVP...

The small print says that only DVD's without "protection"...I had assumed that any "rented" DVD would play to the MVP. I guess I was wrong.

oh well, live and learn...

garyellis,

Keep in mind that 'technically' the law says that you can't break the "protection" on a DVD, and the CSS encrytion on the DVD's prevent them from being streamed over a network which is why in it's default state the MVP won't play them back.

Edit: Some comments removed here & below, since this is not the forum for discussions on how to break CSS encryption, per the forum rules, #4 - Opus4

I just went and got a DVD that I made that I know has not protection on it. And I get the same error...So, looks like the MVP does not want to play from the DVD player.

The MVP will not play from the server's DVD drive. The MVP will only be able to play DVD's ripped to the server drive or a network drive.

Gerry

EDIT: It appears that as long as the disc is unencrypted AND you have added the DVD drive letter as an import you will be able to view that DVD over the MVP. Sorry for the bad info.

What if the disc in the drive is unencrypted? Haven't tried it myself as I don't think the drive in my server is even a DVD drive.

For a DVD that you created, try adding the DVD drive letter as an import path.

The MVP will not play encrypted DVDs, and as I commented in my post edit above, this is not the forum for discussing how to break CSS encryption.

I put a DVD I had produced myself in the DVD drive and added the dvd drive letter to the import list. WOW...I finally got the DVD video through to my MVP....This part worked great...but, I did not get sound....

I made the movie using microsoft movie maker and thus it produced an AVI file from which I used Ulead to create the DVD...Thus, the sound is probably not what is normally expected from a DVD...

Comments.

Thanks for the help,

Gary Ellis

So this is a change from 6.12 to 6.14 (I never tried 6.13). I was having troubles watching DVDs and thought it was just a bug.

It would be nice if it would handle the issue a bit better than just a blank and/or messed up screen.

Make sure you copied over the Dshow player dll that is available in the first post of the release down at the bottom.

I did copy the Dshow player driver into the SageTV directory...that's the only way my DVD's would play on the main PC...

I tested a normal DVD and it worked (video and sound) through to the MVP...It now just seems to be the one that I created, thus, I believe that it must be the type of audio used to create the home made DVD.

Thanks,

Gary
