Media Extender DVD Playback and 5.1 audio

Hi,

The release notes for 6.0.11 mentioned that it should be possible to play hard disk based DVDs with 5.1 audio on a Media Extender.

When I try to play a ripped DVD with 5.1 audio on a MediaMVP connected to a surround receiver via S/PDIF, the receiver only receives a stereo signal.

Is it possible to get 5.1 audio through to the receiver, or will SageTV always transcode to stereo?

My MediaMVP is one of the original wired models without S/PDIF-output built in, so I have added it by following the how-to at http://home.xnet.com/~stuart/images/...vp/index.shtml.

Same problem here? Did you solve it?

Could it be that Sage can't see that we have added a SPDIF port and therefore transcode the audio into two channels. If that’s the case could anyone tell how to force sage to send the audio to the mvp without transcoding?

No, I did not get it solved. I tried 6.0.13 as soon as it was available, but still no luck in getting 5.1 audio out of the MVP

Hi Juc

No problem. If you don’t mind sending the bits to Denmark I’ll do it for free of course - but no guarantee in case I screw up. But it is really very easy. I just followed this guide:

http://www.mvpmc.org/mvpmc_hardware_howto.html

But do you know how sage work with the mvp here? I know that Sage transcode the DVD audio signal for the mvp to be able to handle it but how do you force sage to parse the digital signal directly to the mvp?

Also testet the 6.0.13 with no luck. My worry is that it is only “native” spdif mvp’s that will parse the 5.1 signal but I don’t know

Thanks for the offer---might take you up on that but i'm not sure i can do without my MVP for that long!!

Have you contacted support about this to see what they say? One would think that there can be a setting to always pass-thru the signal but i'm not sure. I'm guessing right now since it isn't working for the homemade ones is that its somehow tied to the revision/model number of the unit and gets some sort of handshake when it starts up.

I sent an email today, so let's see. Thing is I don't know IF it only are the home made ones that have problems. I can't find anything on the forum regarding this issue.

I mailed them too. I also installed mvpmc and successfully played an AC3 test file through my surround receiver in 5.1 surround. So at least we now know that the MVP's can pass through AC3 audio. And that SageTV is supposed to support it

Just had an email from betatest - they had it working in prior betas, and will get it fixed. I'm looking forward to having all my DVD's ripped and instantly available on the MVP's with surround audio

The "MediaMVP Media Center" (www.mvpmc.org). A replacement for the Hauppauge software for the MVP, but only contains the software running on the MVP. It works with MythTV (linux-based PVR) and GB-PVR (another Windows-based PVR).

Yes yes, I know now. It was a stupid question since I linked to their web site before, so I should have checked my self. The reason I asked was that I never used the software.

Thanks for the up date

You can try to use current in development version of the mvp.bin at http://download.sagetv.com/~jeanfran...031106/mvp.bin

This version only works on wired mvp or wireless mvp in wired mode with the server running V6.0.13 beta. It should be included in an upcoming beta version if things go well.

Let me know if it works fine for you.

Hi Demo

Tried the new mvp.bin and so far it works like a charm with Dolby 5.1. No DTS though.

Thanks!

I have the same experience as rtengvad: I am currently watching X-Men: The Last Stand in Dolby Digital 5.1 on my modded wired MVP! No DTS 6.1 though, but who am I to complain just yet Great work!

So I am having this problem with the wired MVP that has the digital coax output. My receiver is not switching into digital audio modes with the MVP. Do I just copy the aformentioned mvp.bin file into the sage directory? It is much smaller than the one that exists there?

Yes, rename your old mvp.bin (in case you need it again) and copy the new one into the sage directory. Be sure that the mediamvp is of.

Good luck

Hi Demo
There are still sometimes problems with menu's not working and audio/subtitles out of sync. Its not consistent and worse with some DVDs than others. I’ve seen DVD menus where you could not see the marker and Sage menu eg. the subtitle menu that was empty.

Didn't know where else to report it. Don't know if it is related to the mvp.bin
