SageClient 6.0.12 ain't working for me.

I upped the server to .12, everything seemed to go well there.

I upped my client to .12 over .11 and it seemed to go well. watched a couple of recorded shows and then it locked up hard on the main menu. I had to end task.

Rebooted and restarted Sage Client. It locked up hard with a black screen instead of the main menu. End Task again. Rebooted again. Sage Client locked up hard again with a black screen. End Task.

Rebooted, uninstalled and reinstalled. Got a Java exception error. "An exception occured in Java: java.lang.NullPointerException". When I clicked OK, Sage went away.

Hmmm, Uninstalled Java 5 update 7 and installed update 9 after a reboot.

Same Java exception.

Uninstalled and reinstalled Sage 6.0.12 with reboots in between.

Same Java exception.

Uninstalled Java 5 update 9, Uninstalled Sage Client. Rebooted. Reinstalled SageClient 6.0.12 and let it install the Java 1.4 it comes with.

Same Java exception.

Uninstalled Sage Client and Java 1.4. Installed Java 5 update 9. Installed Sage Client 6.0.11

Same Java exception.

I'm stumped and can't watch any TV.

Ignore this. The problem was with the server. My GF watched some shows with Placeshfter on her PC and then closed it. That seems to hose the SageTV Service every time. After rebooting the server all was fine (until Placeshifter is used again.)

I saw that too. I hadn't tracked down all the particulars yet to submit a bug report. I had it figured out to .avi's, didn't know if it was divx and xvid, or just one version or not. .mpg and .wmv files seem fine.

Definitely submit a bug report on that one, sounds very odd.

Yes, I fugured this one out too. But what I can't figure out is why they stripped out Mencoder from the Mplayer package and decided to transcode with ffmpeg (AKA SageTVTranscoder) instead? There is no way that I can hook a filter to ffmpeg. I was half tempted to experiment renaming a copy of Mencoder to SageTVTranscoder and putting it in the SageTV folder, but then I realised that ffmpeg expects "-i InFile Outfile" while mencoder expects "Infile -o Outfile" so it wouldn't work.

The reason why I use Mencoder all the time is that 95% of what Sage records for me is material that had been originally shot in 24 fps progressive, and then later has been hard-telecined to 30 fps interlaced for television. When I try to compress any such show in the way SageTV does it now, the result is a disaster: the videos stutter, and every 5th frame is a duplicate (at best).

Mencoder solves this problem beautifully with the option "-vf pullup" and the resulting xvids or h264s are spectacular, especially with 2-pass encoding! I desperately hoped that Sage would naturally go for integrating mencoder, since they are already using mplayer.

Or at least, give us a way to enter our own command line for the conversion. Right there, when I click the "convert" button in SageTV, I want to be able to enter something like "cmd /c d:\mytools\mencoder.exe -ovc x264 -oac copy -ofps 24000/1001 -vf pullup, softskip -o z:\mynewfile.avi" and let SageTV only append the final string to the command, which would be the name of the file I've already selected for converting. Now this would be awesome!! I honestly think that this will be easy to implement, and it will greatly empower people who [think they] know what they are doing. It will be even nicer if Sage can remember my command line, or let me save a few predefined and named command lines in the sagetv.properties file.

Another cool feature would be if Sage can be set up to automatically put every new recording in the conversion queue, with conversion profiles linked to the recorded quality of the file.

On a different note, I noticed a bug (or is it?):
I have one of my PVRs dedicated to only one single channel. I have defined a favorite "movie" restricted to this same channel only. But when I delete a movie recorded from that channel BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE IT, Sage keeps rerecording this movie again and again no matter how many times I say that I don't like this movie. Marking this movie as watched before I delete it would obviously solve the problem, but I am afraid to do so thinking that Sage may draw wrong conclusions: if I watched it, then I probably like something about it, actors, director, or whatever. Why is Sage ignoring the I don't like it flag?

Oh, and one little request: Is it possible that shows that have been converted display some little icon in the lists? It will be easy to see what needs to be converted and what doesn't. Now it is painful to check them manually.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

jds23,
In regards to the AutumnWave/OnAir GT, I am the Technical Support Manager, and can answer your questions. While this particular thread is probably not the best place for questions, feel free to start a new thread (let me know), and I'll provide as much support as I can. I'm not an expert SageTV user, but I will try my hardest to resolve any issues that arise!

Also, feel free to contact me personally (Private Message or email) if you'd like. Thanks especially to Qian (donkey) for the hard work to get the QAM support added!

Thanks,

I have no problem at all FF , REW and resuming play of XVID files with a keyframe of 300 on 6.11 works perfectly. I cannot get them to FF amd REW or resume playback in 6.12. So this tells me that they broke something in 6.12.

Also last night all my recordings came out 0 length in 6.12 and were deleted. So I am totally backed off 6.12 and back to 6.11 and will not be Installing 6.12 until I am sure these problems are corrected.

Following is the first paragraph of an E-mail I sent to support on 8/19/06. The problem still exists in V6.0.12.110. It is really sad that the program name provides more information than the description area. I know of at least 3 programs that use the description area.

Currently the Description area in the SageTV, SageTVClient and SageTVPlaceshifter executables all just say "SageTV". This should be updated to be a more complete description. When I look at my firewall settings, I see 3 programs described as SageTV running, I have to change the view to use the filenames to see which is which.

Still no PCM audio playback for MPEG2 video files

This is a very odd problem - I have confirmed this on my SageTV Server and the Client, but yet you can hear the audio on the placeshifter client - go figure!

I am experiencing the same thing. I play a mp4 file encoded for my iPod and it will play fine. However it will not FF or RW at all. The timeline pops up and the timeline moves forward or backward with presses of the remote but the video does not skip ahead or behind. I am trying to get logs together for support but haven't done it yet.

Im having the same problem.

Thus far I am 100% sure this is impacting ALL mpeg4 filetypes (ie Divx, Xvid, Mp4, WMV, h.284 etc). I have thus far tracked inleast 1 of each file type and all are impacted by the ff/rw problem. And yes this is also occuring with files which were converted using the new conversion features in sage.

I have also updated my codec pack to the beta release from last week (ie I use k-lite mega codec pack). This had no impact on the problem at all.

Im submitting a bug report right after this post.

Same problem here, and most of the .avi videos I have you don't want to watch all the way through.

Are you talking about your video card or decoder? Because the decoder only does mpeg2 not mpeg4 so it is not being used.

Yes, it is the decoder so I guess that is unnecessary info then
