HD 5.1 passthrough

Hi,

I just set up my HD card and it seems to be finally working, so I'd like to make sure that my 5.1 Audio is passed through to my Receiver.

My SageTV box is connected via Optical Cable to my 5.1 receiver and I'm currently using the AC3Decoder Audio Filter that came with SageTV, however, I don't think I'm getting discreet Audio channels.

I also own the NVIDIA pure Video and Audio Decoder, however, if I select the Nvidia Audio Encoder I don't hear anything.

Do I need to configure either the AC3Decodeor the Nvidie Decoder anywhere other than in SageTV to get this working correctly?

Philipp

I'm having the same problem. I just got a couple of R5000 moded starchoice sat recievers hooked up and I right aways noticed that I wasn't getting any sound using the Nvideo Audio encoder, so I switched to the AC3Decoder and I got sound, but my audio receiver was not registering that it is recieving a DD 5.1 like when I watch a movie through zoomplayer, but rather a stereo signal.

Do you have Windows Media Player 10 installed? If so, open it up, go into the Tools menu and select "Options..." This will open up a window for you with a bunch of tabs across the top. Select the DVD tab. You want the Advanced tab at the bottom. For me, at least, using the NVidia decoders, this will open up a configuration screen for the audio decoder. It contains a speaker setup menu that allows you to select speaker type Receiver" and a checkbox for Output using S/PDIF cable. This worked for me getting DD 5.1a few months back

My computer has an optical out (the one with the little red light) and also the RCA looking like organge plug (which I think is the S/PDIF). I am currently using the optical port to connect to my receiver. Does that make a difference? Or is only the S/PDIF port supportet for 5.1?

No, it doesn't make a difference, optical or not.

Have you tried using a different audio renderer?

I would like to use the NVIDIA one, but my onboard chipset is from C-Media and that wasn't on the list of supported NVIDIA audio cards, so I guess I can't use that huh?

I'm trying to use the AC3 Encoder that came with Sage and I am using a little program that I dowlnoaded to change its settings from 2.0 to 5.1, however I don't see a difference. Is there another working decoder I could try?

I got DD5.1 using the AC3 decoder by going into Zoomplayer and changing the AC3 decoder settings to output SPDIF, similar to what Fluffdaddy said to do with the Nvidia decoder. I am still unable to use the Nvidia decoder though, my receiver says its getting a 5.1 signal but no sound, I guess it doesn't matter what decoder I use since I'm just passing the singal through to my pre-amp.

someone said in another post to go google ac3filter and download a full free version somewhere. it will give the full configuration screen with all of the pass through and EQ settings. i did this last week and it's been working great. i was even able to use the volume sliders to match my tuner volume to my dvd player...

I downloaded a free program to access the AC3 Filter settings and I THINK I made have made it work. I wish there would be an mpeg-2 test stream that tests out each channel seperatly so I can know for sure...

Do you have to restart windows until your changes become effective? Would you mind posting the settings you made on the AC3 Decoder settings to get your passthrough to work?

I don't think the supported nvidia has any bearing on optical passthru. If I understand correctly, it will only have an impact when trying to decode DTS and DD5.1. Which it won't do unless you're in WMP or MCE.

Use DirectSound to get 5.1 audio

Make sure that you also use your DirectSound audio device setting in Sage along with either the AC3 filter or the Nvidia audio filter (both set to SPDIF output).

DirectSound gives the best performance (lower CPU) compared to the Waveout device and is more tolerant to problems in the audio stream.

Go download the latest AC3Filter version and set it to SPDIF out. I did and it fixed this very problem.

I have the same issue, I have set the AC3 config to use spdif passthrough. Tested in WM Player 10 with a HD episode of lost, comes up as 5.1 on my reciever. Same file played in Sage, with direct sound (External 24 bit SB) and any decoder filter (AC3/Nnvidia etc...) the receiver is only getting Dolby PL II.

Any ideas??
