Transcoder Max Out CPU
I have a dual core chip. For some reason this morning I noticed that the transcoder was maxing out one of the cores. I am not playing any video on any machines, MVP or play shifters. Why would it be transcoding at all. I am alos not converting any files.

I am getting the same thing here with the latest Beta version. Also, when I first installed the beta version, the transcoder would start up when starting up the UI. Fans where blowing all over the place. Did a control alt delete and found out it was the transcoder at 100 percent. For some reason it does not start up now. Dunno what stopped it.
I'm finding that a lot of video software does this often. 100% of cpu's. So, I'll second this problem.

Assuming you're talking about SageTVTranscoder service, I'm noticing the same thing--it's what's causing the issue I mentioned in another thread where SageTV won't restart after inactivity or a crash. If I stop it, SageTV will restart.
What's odd is that even though it seems to max out the CPU cycles, it doesn't affect the performance of the PC. It must release very frequently. What does this service do? Last edited by Goodspike; 10-11-2006 at 07:45 AM. |

The name gives it away, transcoding
It may be working its way through your recording and imported video libraries generating thumbnails. Have you left it running for a while to see if it completes? I note the OP has 1.5gb of storage which is going to take a while to process if the majority is video. |

As I mentioned in another thread, it's really only an issue after the computer has been running a while, or really after Sage has been running a while. So it seems like whatever it's doing it should have completed.
But I have noticed that when I first start the beta it is somewhat unresponsive for maybe 5-10 minutes. FF/REW commands and volume level changes take a half second to occur. Is this transcoder service necessary? I really don't care about thumbnails. If I just want to record and watch HD programs, can I totally disable this service? |

Could someone direct me to a link that explains what exactly the transcoder does? Is it in the Docs? Have not read them in a while.

it converts from one file format to another, recompressing the video on the way. (eg MPG->JPG for thumbnail creation, AVI->MPG for MVP playback of non-MPG files, *->AVI for V6 convert/recompression feature)

I thought it was a service, but apparently not. |

Came home tonight to find that it was once again maxed out. No one was watching sage and no conversions running. Any idea what i can do to stop it from maxing out?
thanks

It is doing it to me too. I cannot stop the service. It just keeps chugging along. It is ruining my folding@home score.
