Whatever Happened to Ati's Ocur??

ATI had an announcement in January that they were making a CableCard TV tuner... has that just completely fallen off the map??

It is coming. Will come out around the time that Windows Vista comes out.

However, it will not be available to 3rd party sales. It will only come bundled with approved machines.

In other words, you won't be able to buy an OCUR tuner off the shelf. You would have to buy a whole certified PC to get it.

Don't bet on any applications other than Windows MCE to support it either (and then, only the Vista version). Although I guess I could be wrong. But no one else besides Microsoft has announced support for it to date...

yep, you certainly could be (are) wrong. You'll be able to get a MediaReady system with it and running sagetv. Plus I know I've read that MS will be able to provide 3rd party apps with ways to interface with it.

Is this still true? Will the Sage/MediaReady boxes be able to use cablecard? I haven't seen any updates on their site about it.

Also, can you load UI and STV's on VWB machines? That is, SageMC is a requirement for me, and if I can get it, and still get all the benefits of cablecard that would be enough for me to buy a machine as opposed to building one myself. Assuming it would work with extenders, etc...

Thanks,
Mike

Ian Dixon's "The Media Centre Show" just had a MS guy on, who talked about all the ways MCE builders can get CableCard. Pretty interesting.

I doubt this will be available for Sage users. But I would love someone from Sage to tell me I am wrong about this.

Thanks
Mike

I hope im wrong... but I seriously doubt this is coming to Sage anytime soon. That would mean content providers really opening up. This would allow any digital programming off cable to be encoded, or burned to a disc... or shared somehow.

If they do allow it, then why in the hell is Comcast encrypting about 1 4th of all digtal channels (thru firewire).
