confused about software

I have an underwater camera that I have hooked up to a desktop computer and it plays using Win-Tv Go-Plus. I have a laptop that accesses the desktop computer via a network. I have installed SageTV on the desktop. From what I understand I have to install SageTV Client on my laptop. Then, I should be able to access the the underwater camera video from the desktop. Is that correct? And, where do I install the Placeshifter Client? Do I even need that?

Either SageTV Client or SageTV Placeshifter Client will work for you. I'd recommend the Placeshifter Client for you (you can also try each one out and see which works best for you).

You would install the Client or Placeshifter Client on the laptop. Once you've purchased a license for that, the Client license is installed on the laptop. For the Placeshifter license, that gets installed on the server.

Confused about software

I bought the STVSSPC which includes the placeshifter license, but I installed that on my desktop. How do I install the placeshifter on my laptop?

By clicking here: http://www.sagetv.com/postDL.php?tmp...5_0_4Setup.exe while on your laptop. Install and enjoy! Will you be using place shifter from the same network as the desktop (Home or Office?) Or will you be connecting from the internet?

Have fun!

You can.... but if you're behind a firewall, you'll need to open a port pointing to the ip address that Sage Server is running on. Then you can use Placeshifter for your viewing.

Where do I find the IP address for the sage server so I can open the port?

Diane,

This is where it has the potential to get complicated. You will need to open ports in your windows firewall on your desktop (assuming you are running one) and on your router.

As far as routers go, it is fairly easy to do if your router is new enough and works with Sage's UPNP configurator.

The System Information screen on the server lists its IP address. But, go to Detailed Setup -> Advanced -> Configure Placeshifter Internet Connection. There, you will be able to configure the router via uPnP, if it has that capability, or it will show info on what ports & IP address to use for a manual configuration of your router.

And, yes, the Placeshifter client can connect via a local network connection too.

What do you mean -- you get a Window that is filled with black immediately after SageTV starts, or what?

If so: while SageTV is not running, try editing sage.properties file & set this property to disable 3D Acceleration:

ui/accelerated_rendering=false

Yes, I get a black screen when I click on the sagetv icon to run it on my desktop. I do not get the main menu.

I am thinking that I should uninstall sagetv and reinstall it on the desktop. Good idea or not?

If you already tried the property I posted above, reinstalling would be something to try. First, though, I would try deleting sage.properties & its autobackup cpy (or move them elsewhere), then restart SageTV to reconfigure everything.
