Question No PVR-350 remote auto-install

Well, I just got my PVR-350 in the mail and I'm trying to figure out how to get sage working.

I installed the PVR-350 just as the manual said. (I even
read the manual ahead of time knowing this could be problematic.) The WinTV apps worked flawlessly with
the remote.

I installed Sage TV and when the time came I rebooted the
ir control thingy. Then I loaded up Sage TV and went into
live tv mode and I couldn't control anything with the remote.

I looked into irremote.ini and didn't see any Sage TV settings in there. (e.g.)
; First item in this section IS always the default app if no others found
[Applications]
Default=
WinTV Remote=
;Win/TV+=
;Win/TV=
WinTV32=
WinTV32(1)=
WinTV32(2)=

I tried to add the SageTV specific settings into the ini file as per
the previous good thread

and remoted the ir control. Still no control-goodness.

I hope Sage 2 has a better out-of-the-box experience.

I don't think they are planning on changing anything on that level. The good news is that you are in the minority with the setup problem. The bad news is that you have the problem. Somone will post a correction for you.

Good luck.

Try this...

At the beginning of the SageTV installation process, did you select the option to configure the Hauppauge remote?

Whether you did or not, you may want to try reinstalling SageTV and making that selection at the beginning.

Yeah, I am not that dumb. I did follow the Sage
instructions. The Sage auto-installer did not modify my irremote.ini at all, hence my post wondering what was
going wrong.

I've been lurking on the forum for about two weeks getting
ready to intall the PVS-350 when it came and I thought I
knew everything that had been said on the subject.

I have installed Sage four times and done a complete wipe/reinstall of the Hauppage software twice. First time
around I used the Hauppage drivers on the CD, WinTV
worked- Sage didn't. The second time I downloaded new
drivers off the Hauppage site. Every single time the Sage drinstaller failed to modify the irremote.ini file

For the Sage Tech people: Is there any way I can find a
log file for the installer or invoke the irremote stuff myself?
I tried modifying the irremote.ini file myself (according to a post/thread a few weeks ago) but that didn't have any effect either.

I wasn't implying that you were dumb, just that it seems to be a common mistake & that some posts I've seen indicated the remote ini file wasn't modified the first time, but was subsequently. Perhaps they turned off the remote program from the systray before installing SageTV? No idea if that would make a difference, but...

Strange that manually editing your ini file didn't improve things... I've got the ini file controlling several applications now w/no problems making modifications.

Just for grins and giggles you might want to check to make sure irremote.ini somehow didn't get flagged read only. Make sure when you modify the irremote.ini that you stop the remote software and restart it. This will be the only way to see the changes take effect unless you reboot. Putting in the commands from the other post should work for you. Modify-quit the remote software-start the remote software-start Sage and test. Hope this helps.

I found a way to get it working.

While there is no way for to get the installer to
properly modify my irremote.ini you can download the
irremote.ini file from Swifties post
in thread 1877.

Note that in that same thread Gplansky references a
set of instructions for irremote.ini pioneered by Mandrake.
These don't seem to have any effect for me. Maybe they
only apply to the black remote.

I urge anyone with a new PVR-350 that has the silver remote
to ignore all of the other methods and just install the
above irremote.ini in c:\windows.

As for why the installer can't modify the file, I did check the
file and the read only attribute is not set in my installation.
It seems like the installer just doesn't mess with the file
when the install ir remote box setting is checked.

Thanks Opus4 and Gplasky for the suggestions! Sorry
about the "dumb" thing. I've been installing/compiling/writing new
software for long enough that I know to never install
something like Sage without first reading the manual
and the forum.

That's good... always nice to get things working. Here's another thought -- is Windows installed in a non-standard location? I didn't have a problem with H:\Windows (long story; has to do with multi-OS boot options), but I wonder if something like H:\WinXP would throw it for a loop. (I'm just guessing, trying to find something out of the ordinary to possibly help the programmer solve this for others... if it hasn't already been solved. I'm a programmer too, btw.)

Well, I'll have to admit that I was _almost_ annoyed by the "dumb" comment, since I was just tossing out suggestions I had seen others make for the same problem. No one here knows anyone else's techological background, after all. Besides, it is easy for anyone to overlook something.

Now, speaking of irremote.ini... I don't remember if I found this link in this forum someplace or through a google search, but I ran across the only documentation I have seen regarding irremote.ini at: http://dschnabel.virtualave.net/irdocen.htm

Maybe you will find that interesting. It helped me extend my ini file to control other programs -- the only problem I ran into so far was that I sometimes have to make sure the desired program has the Windows focus in order for it to receive commands. Pressing <menu> to bring up the task list helps in that regard.

I would still like to find out how to add to/change the programs in the irremote's program list that pops up when you press <go>, or right-click on its sys-tray icon.

Not a problem for XP

I just updated my system to XP (wipe the disk/start from
scratch) and this time Sage modified irremote.ini fine. Maybe
this is only a problem with Windows ME or the 9x series.

Again, thanks for all the ideas.
