I hate Sage. It's horrible. How can I return my copy? When the new one comes out, which I hope is never, can I get blocked from using it?

LOL, yeah, I shared that one with a few choice people at work...software people, none the less.

I hope that Sage 5.1 takes away features, instead of providing new ones. Who wants features anyway. I'd rather it be more like TiVo...LOL.

<whew> That's a BIG relief!! I'm glad that's what you want, because we've been working these past months on carefully removing selected features instead of adding anything new at all, w/o breaking what was kept (that's the hard part). This is going to be the new "Less is more" concept that will be in use from now on, as the feature set slowly shrinks. It is easier for the user, easier for support... it is just plain easier for everyone.

(Hmmm... maybe I wasn't really supposed to announce that yet, but since it came up...)

I've got one.. and it works.. and get this..

I am running my SageServer through a netgear wireless game adapter up a floor to a wireless Linksys 54g router then wireless back down a floor to my MVP.. course I can't do high bitrate streams and this is only a temp setup until I fix the wire between the server and the router, but my wireless works.. it has room for lots of improvement though!! I really don't want to drill through my walls and run wire around the exterior of my house.. really don't..

So I too am hoping that this unit will be better supported and improved upon with the upcoming beta release and beyond!!!

But it can work.. and does.. for some of us... just could be better.. and should be...

I don't. I use the client over a wireless connection to a p3-500 laptop and that works. However, my lack of wireless MVP proves as much has the problems of people who post that they have problems.

I'm not trying to jerk your chain or belittle you. When things don't work you get frustrated. I've had a few problems, and I've posted. When your problems are resolved(and I suspect they will be) you'll feel better and you may come to regret your post. Basically, take a deep breath and take solace that most of us do have smooth systems and you'll join us.

Or else!

First the many delays of the beta release, now the "Less is more" concept? It seems that SageTV has adopted the Vista development concept.

I wonder what the snapstream folks are up to lately...

inside info about the delay of the next release...

I am participating in the private test group and hope I don't get into trouble for leaking this info.

The reason the beta is taking so long to release is because we are actually testing a pre-beta version at the moment. The Sage Developers decided to throw in the towel with the current program and decided to COMPLETELY redesign sagetv from the ground up. It has been a long time coming and the decision was finally made to migrate to a different software model. They weren't getting anywhere with the Java bugs and with some of the bad "hooks" between the current sage version and some of the Hauppauge equipment, as well as certain computer hardware, etc, etc, etc. So they went ahead a released version 5.04 with known bugs to show their efforts with the last sage model and they started over on this new one currently in the test phase. Sorry folks, I'm really not at liberty to say what the new programming model is just yet.

These are some of the biggest things that are now a part of the "new" redesigned version...

HD recording/playback via tv card/firewire,
native H264 support
native DVB-(x) support
full FM radio support WITH placeshifting (hauppauge cards only)
built-in cd player support (certain players might not work though)
OTF (on-the-fly) recording (hit record... 10 minutes later hit stop and keep only those ten minutes
ability to "unarchive" shows via remote
no more wiz.bin file!!!! (I had to save the best for last!)

There are MANY more new features... to many to list.

BUUUTTTT all you folks are wishing the new version won't be released....

So oh well, maybe us beta testers should just keep this candy to ourselves. I just don't understaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Hey wait a minute, I, (reboot), might as well append this post with my own actual words. I just found my cat, "Sage" walking all over my keyboard!!!!!! Darn cats, that's it, I'm having him neutered tomorrow !!

oh well, here's for wishful thinking for the new release and some new features!!!

By the way, for those who have not caught on... this was just for a laugh!

How many people think Sage 5.1 is a surround sound system?

Whatever the case, so long as it has Rat's Requirements i'm happy

1) m4a support.
2) Music Player that doesnt suck
3) Incorporate recordings back into sage easily. (If i uninstall and re-install sage, recordings should not have to be "videos")
4) Better all-around system like-ability.

Looking forward to this new system. I just hope its not a step backwards for sage

Also, your bit about them releaseing 5.3.4 just to satiate us really explains all fo the "hidden ui features"

They don't have to be videos if you reinstall Sage, but you have to keep your old wiz.bin. You should be doing this anyway because it keeps track of your favorites and watched history.

All you have to do is copy the old wiz.bin file over the new one when you reinstall Sage.

Yeah, I will buy that to a certain point....but .... I really didn't sign up and pay $380 to be a beta tester for software that doesn't work as advertised. I just wanted it to work with my VERY basic/standard/generic D-link 604 router and Emachines computer. How much more bland of a set-up can you get???

That being said, like most of you, I've been around the block before with hardware/software folks that push stuff out early (and I can/have accepted that if they tell you it MIGHT be buggy/still changing). I guess I missed that part with the wireless MVP (my bad).

There are millions if not billions of combinations of hardware, software, routers, etc... and not all of them perform up to spec or within standards. Writing software as complex and demanding as a PVR and expecting it to work on all setups out of the box is asking a lot IMO.

About all Sage can do is develop their software to perform with components that perform within standards and test it on a very limited number of systems (out of the millions of possible combinations). There is no way they can forsee and compensate for every motherboard manufacture who does a poor implementation of their onboard lan, routers that don't perform within spec, etc...

I'm not saying any of that is your problem or that Sage might not have a flaw in their software. Just that there are many situations that a software manufacture can't predict or always compensate for.

Maybe its your wireless or your MVP. Both my crappy p3-500 and Sempron laptops use wireless and it works with no problems.

I was just e-mailed and told about the new 'less is more' feature set. I'm definitely not suppose to let anyone know but...here's whats up:

All of the buggy portions of Sage have been removed, to allow for a more rapid release. The current feature set is:

- A text menu.

Hopefully that will work well for everyone. I commend the Sage team on making this hard decision.
