How can I download this video?

I want to download the video on this page:

http://www.cbs.com/primetime/upfront_2006/jericho.shtml

This is the trailer for the new fall tv show "Jericho". I can play it fine, but I want to download it. Can anyone figure out what the link to this video is? The programming makes it tricky if not impossible. Occasionally I've wanted to download a video like this, but never have been able to figure out how to. I wouldn't think that this type of video would be encrypted. Does anyone know how to do this? I would really like to figure out how to do this for now and in the future.

In general it is not easy to find the downloadable media file for embedded video...

Sometime it is possible from viewing the source and seeing the <object> or <embed> tags, but other times the 'media player object' is built up using DHTML and javascript, and it is not immediately obvious what the URL is (as is the case with this page)

One way to do it is to view the DOM in firefox, and find the object tag for the player and the src attribute which should point to the video src (There may well be Firefox extensions to help find the media URL), However, that is only the first step...

However, even if you have the URL of the 'media', it may just be a pointer to a streaming media server, and this will mean that only a streaming media player can access the file, in which case it is not downloadable...

In the case of the above video the video src URL (in Firefox for RealPlayer) is this which just links to a 'playlist', which contains the URL of the video which is:
Code:
rtsp://real.cbsig.net/g2demand/entertainment/primetime/2006_fall_preview/Jericho_Cleared.rm
As this is an RTSP (real time streaming protocol) link, you will not be a able to just download it, you can only play it in a streaming media appl

In IE for WMP, the player src is this which links to a playlist containing this link:
Code:
http://winmed.cbsig.net/net/g2demand/entertainment/primetime/2006_fall_preview/Jericho_Cleared.wmv
This looks like a downloadable file, but it is not -- it is also a streamed file (over HTTP) and can only be read by something pretending to be WMP...

So for this link, you are out of luck... (unless anyone else has better suggestions )

Try this:

StreamBox VCR
StreamBox VCR Suite contains all the StreamBox related software needed to capture media streams on the Internet(RM, RMVB, RAM, WMV, ASF, ASX).

Thanks very much!!!

Nielm, thanks for the great, thorough explanation!! I really, really appreciate it because I don't know how long it would have taken me to figure out how to get the link myself. The link works great in Windows Media Player. Now I can fastforward and make these videos full screen. Excellent!!

Thanks Gerry for the link! That looks like exactly what I need. I'm going to get it installed soon and see if I can capture the stream.

Thanks!!!!
