NVIDIA decoder
Hello everyone. I finally spent the money and got an NVidia 6600GT video card. When in sage there are 2 options for NVidia video decoders, one is the 'Nvidia Video Decoder" and the other is the "NVidia Video Post Precessor". Does anyone know what the difference is or which is the best to use? The widescreen LCD or plasma's going to have to wait until I get made redundant! Thanks.

Hey Doc,
Nice cow. Decoder is the one you want for the speed. Post processing allows you to further refine the image but consumes CPU resources. HIH B

thanks
Thanks for the quick response
I must admit I was a bit sceptical before spending about £100 on an AGP graphics card that wont be any use if I upgrade the motherboard, but the improvement in quality is awesome |

The Post Processor does in software what the decoder does via your 6600 in hardware, and does it more poorly I might add.
Yes, Decoder is what you want |

ATI
Thanks for the info. I had been using an ATI 9200 graphics card but the quality was pretty poor. I'd spent weekend upon weekend playing with decoders trying to get it better, and then checked what everyone else is using. All I need now is a faster upload speed so I can placeshift at work. The 256KB upload just isnt good enough. They keep offering faster download speeds, I'm going to 6.5MB next month but I really want more upload.

Oh yes, with regards to the cow, as a newbie I don't feel I've earned the privilege to have a cat yet

I'm using the evaluation at the moment, it does seem strange that you buy a card for that much money and then you have to pay a few extra quid for the software that complements it, but whats a few pounds on top I suppose.

True, but the primary market for those cards is computer games not video, so they cut costs to hit the price point. Then they stick it to the video consumers -MrD |

FYI all, there's a new version 1.02-223 out on the nVidia FTP site.

it's on the main site aswell for me. But the registration process has changed.
So I was unable to test it out, without the proper trial information. |

If you've paid once, can you get each new version of the NVIDIA decoder for free?

Upgrades are free as far as I'm aware.

From the hour or so I played with it last night, I like them, they seem more "stable" deinterlacing wise, than the previous version. |

I had the 91.31 driver installed with the 1.02.196 decoder and all was well great priture quality and had all features i.e. smarter.
When I installed the 1.02-223 decoder I lost the smarter feature etc. Is their some procedure I need to follow here. I did remove the 196 decoder before installing the 223 version. thanks PS I am back at the 196 version which again show the smarter selection.

Smarter was removed in 223 (as noted in the release notes) You enable it by selecting Inverse Telecine in the Display Properties now.
