Installation problem on 2.6.16...
Hi
Help please - there are two specific problems here - please read to the end. As I posted a couple of days ago I have been having major problems getting a copy of Gentoo to install. I replaced my DVD drive and can now create a clean CD. The test machine will boot it with no problem but after I go through the steps of pulling in the xml file the installation blows up with an error that the program cannot find a file on the cd adn the installation has failed. After a 1/2 dozen trys I gave up on Gentoo and put a copy of SuSE 10.1 + (Novell Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop release candidate 2(SLED10 rc2). SLED10RC2 installed with no problem and I keyed in: wget download.sagetv.com/linuxweb/sagesetup.sh and then executed it. The script appears to run with no problem and I gave it the serial number. The system then had me change the admin password which I did and after it rebooted I could not login. On the expectation that I had misskeyed the password I reinstalled everything - and had the same problem!! I found my instructions on how to reset a passowrd and followed them: Boot server with install DVD select any installation method at language selection screen press crtl+alt+f2 type fdisk -l to list partitions and identify root type mount /dev/hda2 /mnt (This is for my system) enter chroot /mnt Type passwd root and hit return. The system asks for my new password twice but when it goes to change it -- it cant. The system complains that it can't find a file urandom in /dev. I went looking in /dev and it appears that about 3/4ths of the files in /dev are missing. I did a clean install on another drive and all the files appear to be there BEFORE I did the sagetv installation. I am running SLED10 RC1 on another system and the number of files in /dev on that box was my criteria as to how many files should be in the directory. The clean install of SLED10RC2 on a 2nd drive has the same number of files as SLED10RC1. I have retained the drive that has SLED10RC2 and Sagetv 5 beta if you need me to find something on it. Both of these drives 80 or more GB. ALSO - the IVTV wiki site specifies that 0.6.x should be used for 2.6.16 (and beyond I expect) kernels. Your program downloads 0.4.5 which I epxect won't work. The specific kernel on this package is 2.6.16.16-1.6-default. Thank you Harry Lipkind |

Harry, I hope you don't mind starting here, but I suggest you go to the very start.
Can you run memtest on the system to verify you have no memory issues? Have you tried redownloading the .iso and burning using a program like Nero that will allow you to verify the burn after its complete. I found by doing this I was producing cd's that failed verification everytime. They worked fine for photos and the like but not well enough for operating system installs. I'm not too familiar with Linux, but using the Gentoo live cd was a pretty easy, if extremely time consuming process. After what you are describing I still suspect the Gentoo Live cd. Or else, you've got a compatibility problem. Is the hardware you are using well supported by Linux? Ok, last post for now. Have you tried a simple, clean install from the Gentoo Live cd without the config file from Sage? That would certainly help you narrow down your problems.

The sagesetup.sh script is only meant to be used with the gentoo installer and the provided install profile. If you wish to install on another distribution it will have to be modified. (use the right install system instead of portage for example) _Demo_ |

I suppose the community will create some scripts that will install the Sage system on other distro's... I'd try and cheerlead a project like that, but I have neither the time or the knowledge to do it.
