I dont think I can build one at these prices!

I will be adding a Nvidia DUALTV card,PVR-150, 3 or 4 mvp's and some more drive space... This will be a dedicated machine for SAGETV only! Just put it in the basement and forget about it(I hope!) If I need to get to it i will remote desktop to it....

looks like it should. I am using a p41.8 on my server with 2 pvr150, one nvidia dualTV, and one fusion 5 lite. does just fine and I can even doe some autoGK encoding on it.

yes, unless you use HD placeshifting and/or comskip, then it should be just fine for a dedicated recording server, at least power wise.

On the other hand, I wouldn't buy an AMD machine for a server, unless the motherboard uses Nforce 4 chipset. There's nothing wrong with AMD processors, they are super fast. I just have stability problems with the AMD motherboards, particularly VIA chipset ones. I just swapped my AMD/VIA server for an all Intel one, both intel CPU and motherboard, and so far its been better stability wise.

Server

So do you think the cheap intel chips are ok, like Centrino's?

Be very careful with inexpensive PCs. There are reasons why they are so low in price. I am currently using an eMachine for my server. HardDrive died on it after only a month. After 12 months of continual use, the onboard video and ethernet are going on it now. Hopefully it can hold out long enough for me to figure out a replacement.

I think you meant the intel celerons or Pentium Ms, not centrinos, which are laptop branded computers with intel Pentium Ms.

I think any chips greater than 1.5ghz is fine for a server with hardware encoders, like the PVR cards from Hauppauge or nVidia. But as said before, if you are using placeshifter, especially for HD, then you need a more powerful machine.

And the important thing is the motherbaord, especially for bargain PCs, you don't know what brand they put in there, and its always a bitch to replace the motherboard if it dies.

Got an email yesterday. Dell is offering its PowerEdge SC430 server for $499. Specs on it look good. Need to add OS.

If you are in the market for new hardware, signup for Dells and HPs deals emails. You may have to sign up under small business to see the deals on servers.
