Concerning the purity of the trappist recipe... I thought that everyone who sent beer to the USA was required to add preservatives and do other nasty things to the beer in order to meet some sort of US Food and Drug Administration standards.

But, at that level of alcohol content, it may be that Chimay disqualifies itself from the beer category and thus avoids all of that nonsense.

I will say that I hope the US importer's markup goes to the same charitable works that the trappists' profit goes to, but I tend to doubt it!

Since I brought up Delirium Tremens, and Niel pointed out that it features Pink Elephants on its label, I thought I might try to understand why Pink Elephants and drunkenness are supposedly related. This is what I found:

http://www.creativepro.com/story/feature/20593.html

Despite it having nothing to do with Pink Elephants, I think my favorite part of the story is this: "Drunks and lampposts have gone together since lampposts were invented."

I should point out, for anyone who does not know, that delirium tremens is the medical/latin term for "the shakes".

Don't know about the Grand Permier, but a 330ml litre bottle of Chimay Bleu costs €1 in the supermarket... In bars, its 2-2.5 times that... Hoegaarden is a bit cheaper at €.50/ 250ml btl in the supermarket...

Amazingly just a few 100miles over in the UK, they charge £2/btl for normal Chimay blue -- thats €9/litre! Nice little profit for someone!

I had the name wrong... it is Grand Reserve, not Grand Premiere (the Bleu bottle).

I think the moral of the story is that people who love Belgian beer should live in Belgium for price/performance purposes.

Hmm.. I don't know why everyone gets so excited over Chimay. It's hard to find here but I did happen upon it once: it was the tan label. It was corked like a champagne bottle and for a good reason -- it was so carbonated, I was belching all night long. JUST FROM ONE BOTTLE! As far as taste, it was... okay. The bubbles were hard to get past but I remember it was very heavy on the malt.
Haven't had one since.

Creemore Springs (www.creemoresprings.com) gets my vote. Very good but needs to be drunk fresh as its unpasteurized (like most good beers)

It's unfortunately been bought out by one of the big generic beer companies here in Canada, but so far they haven't messed with it.... hopefully it stays that way.

Fave beers:

For cold months and not with food: Sam Adams Double Bock

Generally: Salvator (double bock) or Black Hook Porter

If i ever find myself in Scotland again where it'll be fresh: Traqair House Ale (don't miss this if you're in Scotland)

Yuengling Lager is my preferred.

Did you watch Modern Marvels on brewing. If you like beer and knowing how things work, I would recommend watching it.

I don't really have a favorite beer as I don't particularly enjoy beer and much rather drink Bailey's or Jack and Coke.

I wonder what Opus4's favorite beer is.

Talking

Arrogant Bastard (http://www.arrogantbastard.com/) (Read the label on line, I can't post it, but it is one of the single best descriptions of a beer ever. It is dead on) from Stone Brewing Co (www.stonebrew.com). I also love their Stone IPA.

The Hoppier the better....

So many wonderful beers out there.... Like TV shows, willing to watch anything once, enjoy many, fall back on a few favorites.

See your first sentence, except that I prefer Riesling wines from Germany. Rieslings from elsewhere aren't anything like them.

About all I use beer for is cooking -- particularly a recipe or two from Biker Billy Cooks with Fire

If you are ever in Toronto, I highly recommend you visit the Beer Bistro (http://www.beerbistro.com/). Along with having an excellent selection of beers, they also go the extra distance to recommend beers for wine lovers and do pairings of beer with all their food. Lastly (and most impressively), their ENTIRE menu features dishes which use beer as an ingredient. If you in any way shape or form enjoy A) Beer or B)Food or C) any combinations of A & B, its a great place to visit =)

online shopping

I know we can all do online shopping, but how about a sage module for ordering beer via the remote? then I'd never get out of the chair.... I'd have to get myself a wife to let the delivery man in. If I got myself a wife I may as well send her to get the beer anyway... but how would I get a wife if all I do is drink beer and watch tv?

I like a good pint of wifebeater (Stella) or guinness.

HA! I've never heard it called that. I just replaced the SN with Stella the other weekend. Good summer beer (especially when it's 110° out)

Hmm, well Pilsner Urquell is my favorite lager. Rolling Rock for cheap summer time beer. I also like wheat beer.

Someone mentioned Blackhook porter above, i used to drink that some, but i recently got a skunked 12 pack bleh.

Guiness Extra Stout is good, dont much care for the draft.

Almost anything Sam Adams brews is good, especially the cream stout.

Also, Fat Tire on occasion.
