Do You Want DVD Burning Functionality?

How many of you would like to have the ability to recoird (BURN) your recorded movies unto DVD and have this feature be part of SageTV core functions that you can elect to have?

I know some have worked on this, but I am wondering how many would be interested is having it part of SageTV core application?

Yes, I know that for Windoz it all depends on the burning application softwarre, so how about supporting a few basic burning clients like nero, Roxio, etc, or freeware if it exists.

As for skipping commercials, I know this is a touchy subject - so not having this feature when burning a movie would be a smart move but leave the code in for being able to *add* say showanalyzer.

This is actually pretty funny. Some people want to move their recorded shows to DVD while others like me want to copy all of our DVDs to HDD.

The question as posed doesn't entirely make sense. Either it's a core function, built into the product and part of every SageTV installation, or it's an optional add-on that you can elect to have or not as you see fit. It can't be both.

Given those choices, I vote for keeping it an optional add-on, and against building it in.

I can see how it would be nice for some, but personally, I'd never use it.

May I ask why you and some others feel this way ? Even if it was built in sage core, you don't have to use it.
thanks

But they do have to develop it. Development time is a limited resource. Should the Sage devs spend their limited time following in the footsteps of third-party devs? Or should they spend their time doing things that only they can do, such as providing better tools for third-party devs to develop useful add-ons? I vote for the latter.

I agree - Same reason I voted not to put it in core... Of course, I feel the same about placeshifting...

Key areas that are lacking in the product even with the improvements from the STV developers:
Improved music handling
Improved Favorites
IR blasting from client for complete front end control
Sync playback among clients
2 screen mode

Its a no brainer that this would be a nice feature. But how far up the priority list is undetermined. I guess this is why Joe123 made the poll, to find out how many people want it.

Personally for me, I like to have this feature, but as GKusnick said about development time being limited, I rather have them work on Music and Pictures interface improvements over DVD burning.

I voted "Don't Care" but would change it to "No". I wouldn't want time taken from developing the Music section, et al. I've burned exactly 1 DVD from a Sage show in almost a year...and that was because I was traveling. It all goes/stays on the hard drive...if I run out of space, I buy another HD. As spoiled as this sounds, I now find even opening the DVD tray a PITA

Very good point. I think that it would be a good idea to put out a public polling area to see which features the user base thinks is most important.

So we first need to come up with a list and then have people vote *only once* on which item of the entire list they would like to see first. This would help SageTV focus their energy on the most wanted and desired features the users think are important to them.

Not sure why this have not been done already?

I want an Audio CD Player core capability or plugin way before DVD burning capability.

Realistically, users who have already bought the product probably have less say in what features get added than potential users who have not yet made the decision to buy. Sage already has our money. Adding the features we want may make us happy, but it doesn't generate much new revenue.

On the other hand, adding the features that Joe Fencesitter wants may be enough to tip him over into the paying customer category. New feature development has to be paid for by new customers, so that's who they're going to please first.

Happy customers bring in more customers.

The fact that they keep an open mind and listen to their customers about where to go next makes me want to buy more stuff (extenders, MVP's, etc) even if I don't really need anything right now.

Me chosse don't care well becuases it take way more then that to make me happy becuases basic burning in way to limited for me.
1: I like editing out the junk ads.
2: I like chapter points 1 min.
3: I like custom menu's for Multi-Video for episodes show.
4: Ulead DVD Tweak and Fit is a must have type of option after all even with edited video dosen't alway fit the disc.

I burn shows and imported videos to playable DVD's so rarely that I wouldn't put forth the effort to piece together anything to do it on my own, but if it was a seemless part of the core, i'd prolly use it more often.

That would be so cool! How about including a mini-mpeg editor to allow the user to select commercials and cut them out just prior to burning? Even a 200gb hard drive fills up pretty fast so its nice to be able to archive a few classics here and there. Its simply impractical to use a harddrive as the sole storage medium. Besides, inevitably harddrives will crash.

Anyone who has a multi-tb system had better have a good redundant SCSI array or one day they'll wake up and find they've lost 10,000 hrs of recordings.

Tell that to the poor suckers who bought Windows Me only to then end up needing to pay for Windows XP. There are always people who will pay for upgrades.

Sage has a very good revenue model and as long as the quality is there, I will support them with my purchase. I trust them more than micro$oft.
